Christina and Philip
How We Met
I first met Phil when I was 14 years old. My aunt and uncle had decided to bring me to their church for a visit and he was the pastor’s son. After the church service ended, I noticed a few guitars lying around and, after asking permission, I picked up one and started to jam out. Much to my dismay, this random kid walked up to me and abruptly asked for his guitar back. He said he needed to put it away but of course, as soon as he had it in his hands, he just played it himself. Needless to say, I spent the next few years hating his guts!
About eight years later, I moved back home and my parents told me that they were going to this great new church. Lo and behold, it was the same church I had visited as a teenager! Phil was still playing guitar on stage and I immediately noticed how much older and handsome he seemed. I patiently waited for him to come talk to me but he never did; even after eight years, I still hated his guts!
One night, I finally had enough! I walked up to the stage where he was packing up his guitar (go figure!) and angrily yelled, “You never say hi to me”! I suppose my audacity startled him because from that day, he made a point to talk to me! Shortly after that, he asked for my number and we had our first date. Three years later, and here we are! Oh, and just for the record, he definitely lets me use his guitars now!
how they asked
A few weeks ago, Phil invited me to a “work event” at the Great Pumpkin Farm. I’ve always loved Autumn and going to a pumpkin patch seemed like the perfect way to enjoy a warm, Fall day. We spent the afternoon eating deep fried foods, walking through corn mazes, and watching a very entertaining pie eating contest! After our time at the fair, we got ready for a formal dinner in Niagara Falls with two of his co-workers…or at least, that’s what I thought we were doing! After crossing the American border (He’s American and I’m Canadian), Phil told me that we had a few minutes to spare before dinner so we could take some time to look at the Falls. He then suggested going up to a look out point so we could get a better view.
At this point, I definitely knew something was up! Phil kept checking his phone, looking around him as though someone was watching us, and repeatedly told me how much he loved me. Needless to say, my heart was racing the whole time! We went up a flight of stairs and when we reached the top, I was shocked to see three of his best friends recording us. The ground was strewn with rose petals and before long, Phil was telling me how much I meant to him. I don’t remember much else after that point, except the part where my favourite person got down on one knee and asked me to marry him to which I excitedly replied “YES”!
If that moment wasn’t special enough, Phil surprised me even further by bringing me to a restaurant where all of our friends and family were waiting to congratulate us. After an amazing meal, our family left and Phil and I rode the Niagara Sky Wheel for the first time as an engaged couple. It was a night I’ll never forget!
