Emily and Travis
Back in 2013, I transferred out of St. John’s University to St. Joseph’s College. Looking back, that was one of the best decisions I have ever made because it led me to my now fiancé! As soon as I transferred to St. Joseph’s I immediately became best friends with Connor Ray. We were two peas in a pod who would constantly bicker over each other’s choice in the hockey team. Fast forward to May 2016, Connor, myself and a few friends of ours decided to go out for some ice cream. I drove to Connor’s house and as he came outside I noticed his twin brother, Gavin, sitting inside. Never having the opportunity to meet Gavin due to the fact that he was always away at school at SUNY Maritime, I jumped on the opportunity!
Without hesitation, I told Connor to have Gavin join us and he did! Gavin and I talked all night long and it was like we had been friends our entire lives. Immediately I knew that there was something special about him. At that time, Gavin and I were both at a crossroads in our lives just having graduated from college and getting full-time jobs. Fast forward again to Halloween Weekend 2016, Connor and a few friends of ours went out in the city. Upon seeing Connor I asked him, “Where’s Gavin?”.
Connor responds with, “What do you think he’s cute or something?!”. Clearly he can see through my blushing cheeks that I 100% did but I totally tried to cover it up. I responded with, “No! It was just a question!”. Connor then decided to take it upon himself to turnaround and text Gavin that I thought he was “cute”. When Connor showed me his phone I was absolutely mortified and I wanted to crawl under a rock. All night I was curious as to what Gavin would respond with but of course, he never did. About a week later, Gavin responded to a picture I posted on Snapchat of a boat (he’s a captain so he really enjoys these things) and its been history ever since! We went on our first date the day before Thanksgiving 2016 and were completely inseparable.
In October 2018, my whole world came crashing down. I unexpectedly lost my Dad at the age of 49. I felt like my heart had been ripped out of my chest. I had a very difficult time understanding why my dad was taken from us and was finding it hard to appreciate the positive things in life. As an only child, I worried about taking care of my mom. I worried about how he and I were ever going to move on with life without dad. Not that I would ever expect anything less, Gavin stepped up to the plate and reassured me, as well as my mom, that we were going to be ok. He was there for my family and I every step of the way and with every high and low life threw at me. He truly helped me to somewhat heal my broken heart. My Dad’s birthday is on Christmas Eve and since I was a little girl that was always my favorite day of the year. After my dad’s passing, Christmas Eve turned into my least favorite day of the year. It just didn’t seem right celebrating without him. Christmas Eve 2019, my mom and I were hosting dinner for our family.
The night before I was doing some last-minute errands. When I went into the supermarket, Gavin called my mom and asked for her permission to marry me. She did such a wonderful job keeping it a secret because I truly had no idea what was going on. My mom even spoke to Gavin’s mom and they shared their excitement and I still knew nothing! That morning I got up, put on my sweatpants and sweatshirt and headed straight for the cemetery. As my mom and I sat and cried, we talked about how unfair it was that dad wasn’t with us and how we missed him so much it hurt. We left dad a birthday balloon, blew him a kiss and went home so we can begin preparing dinner for our family. That morning my mom was throwing subtle hints that I never picked up on. She insisted that I got my nails done and my hair is blown out, which I am ever so grateful for. That day Gavin came early to help us get ready.
Prior to Gavin’s arrival, my mom kept telling me that I should go get dressed. I was persistent in not changing because I didn’t want to cook and get my Christmas Eve outfit dirty! As soon as Gavin came over, he suggested that we should exchange presents. I agreed and began getting his presents together. As soon as I began gathering them my mom whipped out her phone and began recording. Not thinking I figured she was going to take some pictures of us exchanging gifts.
When I turned around, I see Gavin, the love of my life, my soulmate, my best friends and another half on one knee. As you can see from the video, I was in complete shock. No makeup, hair in a ponytail, wearing yoga pants and a sweatshirt, Gavin asked me to be his wife and of course I said YES! I wouldn’t have it any other way, it was so genuine and natural just like our love story. Proposing to me on my dads birthday, Gavin explained to me that he wanted to make the holidays a happy time for me again and he most certainly did. Just the thought of it brings me to tears. My dad was there with us that day and I am blessed to be marrying a man just as loving and caring as him.
