How We Met
We met in college in the adorable town of Dahlonega, Georgia. I had seen him around but it wasn’t until I rushed Phi Sigma Pi (a coed National Honor Fraternity) in Spring 2013 that we officially met. He was already a member when I rushed, but shortly after I was initiated, he left for an internship in Italy. Not long after he returned, Georgia experienced the infamous “Snowpocalypse” and we quickly became friends. He knew he liked me long before I knew I liked him, but it wasn’t until March that I agreed to go out with him. While out with friends, he sent me a text inviting me to join the group. To this day, he says that he really wanted me to come but didn’t think I would unless other friends were there. He played hard to get that night by socializing with the rest of the group and then subtly paying attention to me. He finally sparked my interest when he volunteered to walk me to my room after a weird guy wouldn’t leave me alone. Being the gentleman he is, he walked me to room and enchanted me with a simple goodnight kiss before heading back to his dorm. That night was the start of the rest of our lives! We quickly fell in love and almost 2 years later, here we are!
how they asked
Thaddeus knew he was going to marry me less than 6 months into the relationship. (And let’s be honest… so did I.) In September 2015, T found a moment alone with my mom and got her blessing. She didn’t even let him finish asking his question before she got excited and started hugging him! Fast forward to December. Although Thaddeus had been acting funny for a while, he had me convinced that he wouldn’t be able to afford a ring until closer to the deployment… “hopefully.” He also told me that he got me some boots for Christmas, but he needed to switch them out because he got my shoe size and ring size mixed up.
I got to be a part of the family tradition this year and come with Thaddeus and his family to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. We hadn’t taken any legitimate pictures since last August, so Thaddeus told me to bring my camera. He knows how much I love pictures. The plan was to take pictures on top of the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse around golden hour, which is typically around an hour before sunset. Since the whole family was going, we were supposed to take some “couple photos” and some family photos. It was about 4:25 on Sunday, December 27, 2015 when we got to the lighthouse and the sun was slowly making its way down; golden hour had just begun. We walked up the 200+ steps as quickly and sanely as possible to make the most of the sunlight. I was helping his brother, Sam, set up my camera for our pictures while Thaddeus (unbeknownst to me) got into place for the proposal. It was about 4:45, the lighting was perfect, and we took a few pictures before Thaddeus pointed out to the edge of the inlet and told me to look at the waves hitting the rocks.
While I was still looking out at the ocean, Thaddeus took a step back and got down on one knee. He called my name and I quickly realized what was happening, and my heart was pounding. I turned around and saw him down on one knee, grinning ear to ear with the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen in hand. I don’t remember it, but according to the video, I squealed and went straight to kiss him. I, the most talkative person ever, was both completely surprised and speechless.Thaddeus said, “Well I didn’t get you any boots for Christmas… but I did get the right size ring.” Still speechless and completely ecstatic, all I could do was nod my head and kiss him. Thaddeus then asked, “Well? What’s your answer?” I somehow managed to say yes and started to cry happy tears as I kept kissing him. Another fun fact: I’m not really much of a crier. Here I am, someone who is rarely speechless, surprised, or brought to tears, and Thaddeus managed to do all 3 in one moment. He then stood up and slid the GORGEOUS ring onto my finger, and his family happily embraced us with hugs and congratulations. It took a while for the shock to subside, but this was the happiest day of my life!
