how we met
Chris and I met 5 1/2 years ago through mutual friends in college. My best friend Colleen gave Chris my phone number in July 2013. Chris and I started talking back and forth, and instantly connected! We made plans to see Despicable Me 2 as our first date. When Chris picked me up for our first date, he met my WHOLE family…. my mom, my dad, my twin brothers, my sister, and my grandpa. As my dad would say, he was a very nice “young man”! We went to the movies and had a blast. It was a perfect first date! We continued to talk, and Chris asked me to be his girlfriend on November 9, 2013.
how they asked
Chris and I had been planning to take off work on November 9, 2018 since April. November 9 was our five year anniversary and we had special plans to go to Annapolis for the day. A few nights before, Chris mentioned that we should go on an adventure to Sandy Point State Park (rain or shine) before lunch. I agreed that was a great idea! We had been wanting to go for months. On Friday, November 9, we awoke to a rainy day in Maryland. This wasn’t going to stop us from going on an adventure! Chris showed up to my house at 11:00am, and I wasn’t ready…. He told me lunch reservations were at 1:00pm and we needed to hurry if we wanted to go to Sandy Point. I ran inside, finished getting ready, and we were off. I got in Chris’ truck and he was wearing his heavy winter coat. I asked Chris “aren’t you hot?!?” and he said nope! Little did I know, he was hiding a ring in his left coat pocket. While driving, Chris asked me if I had any dollar bills for admission into Sandy Point State Park. I said I had a $5 and that was more than enough to get us in. As we approached I-97, I saw Chris was texting someone. I asked him what he was doing, and he said he was changing the song on his iPhone. I knew I saw him texing someone, but I ignored his answer. Again, this was nothing out of the ordinary. When we arrived at Sandy Point State Park, the rain let up! Chris got in the lane to pay, and noticed the machine would only take (3) $1 bills! The machine wouldn’t take the $5! We had to reverse the truck and get into a credit card line. This is when I realized something was up…. He was a little shaky and couldn’t get the credit card into the slot. I helped him, and the gate allowed us to enter the park. We drove straight back and parked the truck. Chris got out of the truck and screamed “ LET’S DO THIS!” I thought to myself “Wow, he’s a little excited for our adventure…” We found the path to enter the beach and started walking the length of the beach. I looked to my left and noticed there was a parking lot. I saw what looked to be a maroon Acura MDX (my mom’s car) and a maroon Honda CRV (my dad’s car). I asked Chris “are those my parents cars?” and that’s when he said “yes, along with my mom’s car, my sister’s car, my aunt’s car, your aunt’s car, and your grandparent’s car….” I immediately began crying because I knew what was about to happen. Chris proceeded to tell me that he knew from the beginning that I was the one he wanted to marry. I was a very special girl and he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. We continued to walk the length of the beach, and once we passed a dune, I spotted a canopy in the distance, along with 16 of our closest family members. Chris had me turn towards the water, and told me to look at the lighthouse. When I turned around, he was down on one knee, asking me to marry him! I instantly said “YES!” and we walked towards our family to celebrate. The second we got our families, it started pouring down rain. Someone was most definitely looking after us! We had champagne on the beach, followed by family pictures. Afterwards, we went across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and celebrated our engagement over lunch with family. We are both very close with our families, and it meant so much that they could be there to celebrate the special day with us. Our proposal seems like a fairy tale…. It was all I could have imagined, and more!
