Chloe and Tom

Chloe and Tom's Engagement in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

How We Met

Tom and I met in September 2015. We laugh about it now, but we actually met on Tinder. I think Tom and I were destined to meet. Some of his cousins went to my secondary school and there were lots of little links, even though our family homes were almost 2 hours away from each other. Both of us had moved to Dublin for work, and we met there. We WhatsApp messaged each other for one week before Tom asked me on our first date. We met at a bus stop in Dublin City Centre. I got off my bus and Tom was supposed to meet me but it turned out that he was at the wrong stop! I thought he had stood me up!! When we did meet, it was like we had known each other our whole lives. We had dinner and then went for cocktails. We spent the entire night chatting and laughing, we clicked instantly. I managed to just make the last bus home, but even after our date when I got on the bus we texted the whole journey home. After our first couple of dates, I told my brother I was going to marry Tom. We’ve been inseparable ever since that first date almost 4 years ago.

This is the first photograph we ever took together from November 2015, when we were babies!!

How They Asked

On October 10th, 2018, Tom proposed in La Fortuna in Costa Rica. That night, we went for dinner and cocktails. We had such a lovely night and even chatted about the fact that everyone in work would expect us to come home from our trip engaged. I told Tom that I knew that wouldn’t happen. After dinner, we got a taxi back to our hotel, which was a cabin in La Fortuna, surrounded by trees and animals. It was beautiful. When we got home, I changed into a cozy jumper and leggings. Tom said he wanted to sit outside, and brought out a second chair onto our porch so we could sit together. When I sat down, he pulled my chair closer. It was dark out, and the sky was full of stars. We could hear lots of animal noises. Tom brought up our earlier conversation about engagement and said: “I do have a question to ask you”. He got down on one knee, reached into his pocket and pulled out a beautiful white ring box. I freaked out and said, “no you don’t, no you don’t”. Tom said the most beautiful words about how I am the love of his life and how he wants to spend forever with me. He said the words “will you marry me?” and I was in such shock I just hugged him. Even now we’re not 100% sure I said yes in those first few minutes!! When he asked me if I wanted to see the ring, I said no and hugged him some more. When we put the ring on my finger it was like it was always meant to be there.

This is the first photograph we took together after we went back into our hotel room. We texted our families, we couldn’t call as there is a 7 hour time difference between Costa Rica and Ireland. My mum and dad already knew he wanted to propose as Tom had told my dad he bought a ring, and Tom’s mum and sister also knew he was planning to ask. We lay in bed for hours chatting about everything before falling asleep in our little bubble.

These photos show the incredible location Tom chose to propose in. The second photograph shows the two chairs we were sitting on together before he got down on one knee.

The next day we went on a hike and took some photographs beside Arenal Volcano.

Where to Propose in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

We spent the rest of the day at a hot spring spa, which was such a special place to spend some time together in and let our huge news sink in. We told our closest friends and family members our big news.

We spent the next two weeks traveling around Costa Rica, where we took loads of photographs. Then we flew back to Ireland and celebrated with our family and friends.

The ring that Tom gave to me is the most incredible ring. It is a platinum solitaire and it is so incredibly precious. Tom designed the ring himself and chose to have a floating diamond. We never spoke about rings or what type I would like, but somehow he knew that I wanted a solitaire. He couldn’t have chosen anything more perfect for me. It sparkles whenever any lights hit it and I love it more every single day!

A few weeks ago we had some professional photographs taken which were gifted to us by Freddie Greenall as an early wedding present.

We started planning our wedding in November 2018, and we booked our big day for December 1st, 2019. It is less than four months until we say I do, and I couldn’t be more excited. Tom is the most incredible man, he has such a beautiful soul and a big heart and I cannot wait to marry him. We have been through so much together in our four years, we have lost some incredibly important family members along the way but he is my rock and my world and I would be lost without him. We have shared some of our best days together, and he has been my shining lights through some of the worst. I cannot wait to spend forever with my best friend.

Special Thanks
