How We Met
Sam and I met in college in the Fall of 2014, my freshman year and his junior. We went to Missouri State University, where we were very active in the marching band. I play flute and he plays trumpet and was also a drum major for two years. In my freshman year, I joined Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Service Fraternity. He was assigned to be my “big brother” to sort of guiding me through the process of becoming a member. We clicked immediately, even if it took a year and a half for us to start dating!
How They Asked
In 2019, we went to Stillwater, Oklahoma for the Kappa Kappa Psi National Convention. We had been to multiple KKPsi conventions before but this one was extra special. It was the 100th anniversary of the fraternity being founded, and the convention was held at the university it was founded at. On the first day there, we were in a large auditorium to welcome everyone and kick off the convention. At the end of the welcome, Sam was asked to come up on stage to speak. I thought it was odd since he didn’t tell me he was speaking, but at the time, he was the vice president for our district, so I didn’t think much of it.
When he got on stage, he spoke about how his time in the fraternity shaped him as a person but said that the most impactful part was becoming a Big Brother. He spoke about what it meant to him, and how important our relationship had become. He then asked me to join him on stage, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him in front of the national council and around 1000 members of the fraternity there for the convention. It was spectacular, and we felt like celebrities as we were continuously congratulated by brothers from around the country the whole week.
