How We Met
I can easily say that our journey began with my best friend Maria. She comes from a huge family – the Asilos. I would attend her family parties and spend many weekends at her house. I felt as if I knew her entire family, until one day freshman year, she asked me, “Have you met my cousin Justin Asilo?” and I immediately remember thinking, “What? There’s another Asilo?!” I still remember the moment that I knew that I was going to marry Justin. We had just been elected junior class president & vice president, and each summer, our high school’s student government attends a retreat to prepare for the year. One night, we were all hanging out in the cabin talking about ourselves, our lives, and our goals. It was probably the first time I had talked to Justin for more than a just few sentences in passing, and I was blown away by his wittiness and charm.
We spent the first half of our junior year getting to know each other and quickly found out we had way more in common than we thought – we both loved basketball, Kanye West, and Italian food. This was the man of my dreams! With homecoming approaching, I thought for sure that he would ask me to be his date. But believe it or not, I was friend-zoned. I feel like I worked tirelessly for months to get him to like me. My efforts finally paid off when Justin asked me to be his girlfriend on January 4, 2009.
Throughout the last two years of high school, we experienced triumphs and losses. Justin stood by my side as Homecoming King and Queen (what a difference a year makes, right?), and comforted me when I was rejected from my dream college. We even planned our schedules out perfectly so that we had every class together. I knew I would never find anyone as wonderful as him.
Our journey continued on as we both attended UC Irvine and supported each other as we pursued our dreams of becoming a registered nurse and film director. Nine years later, Justin popped the question and we are so excited to see where this journey takes us next!
how they asked
Just a few weeks before his birthday, Justin and I decided that we fly back home to spend it with family and friends. With not a lot of time to coordinate, I frantically booked flights and began making plans. Little did I know, Saturday, March 24, 2018, had already been planned out for me.
A week before, Justin told me that he had reserved dinner for the two of us at a nice restaurant in San Francisco. The next day, my sister called me and told me that she had won four tickets from her work to the California Academy of Sciences and asked if we would be interested in attending with her and her boyfriend. Of course, I said yes since we would already be in San Francisco for dinner that evening. After a morning of wedding dress shopping for my best friend Maria (and being asked to be her maid of honor!!), we headed out to the museum.
At the museum, Justin mentioned that there was a planetarium show right before closing. I was so excited, especially because both Justin and I love planetariums and space (especially after watching La La Land.) After the show ended, Justin asked if we could stay seated while everyone exits through the back. It was a huge crowd, so I didn’t mind at all. Once the planetarium was empty, Justin let out a huge sigh, turned to me and said, “Chloe, I have to tell you something.
I lost my phone.” The four of us began looking under many rows of seats and just as I was about to give up, the entire planetarium goes dark. I remember shouting, “Uh oh! We lost a phone, could we have some more light?” Then all of a sudden, a spotlight turned on, and I thought to myself, “Okay… that’s weird. But it works!” As we continued looking, the entire planetarium lit up with stars. I looked around, and as I heard the first notes of the ballad from the musical Hamilton, and immediately broke into tears. This was it. He was going to ask me to marry him!
Justin quietly told me that there were people coming down the stairs, and I looked up to see tons of our friends and family. He walked me down to the front of the planetarium, and for what felt like an eternity, we just stared at each other, crying and smiling. I could not believe we were finally here. Justin began talking about our incredible journey together, got down on his knee, and asked me to continue this journey with him for the rest of our lives, and I said, “OF COURSE!!!!”
We spent the night celebrating with both of our families and our friends with a surprise engagement party hosted by my parents at their house. March 24, 2018, was perfect, and I am so grateful to my fiancé (EEEEK!!) for making it a day I will never, ever forget.
