How We Met
Oscar and I met for the first time when I was about 10 years old and he was about 11 (we are both 21 now). We met at a local summer camp in our hometown, Rockford IL. For the first couple of weeks, I was not interested in him at all. But one day we just kind of started talking and I thought he was cute ( he had long curly hair at the time that I just loved!), and so we started to hang around each other more. One day, we took a field trip to a local swimming pool and we were inseparable the whole day. Towards the end of the day, I noticed that he started to act kind of weird. He took me away from the other kids and he sat me down on the poolside chairs and he asked me if I want to be his girlfriend… of course, I said yes! At the moment I was excited and couldn’t believe I was actually “dating” someone ( as much as an 11-year-old could date). The next day, Oscar was not at camp and I didn’t know why (I will come to find out in the future that he was sick), so I just hung out with some of my friends the entire day and one of them just happens to be a boy. This boy asked if It was true that I was dating Oscar and I said yes and he responded by saying that that sucked because he wanted to date me… well it just got awkward at that point, so I distant myself away from him for the rest of the day. The following day after that, a rumor started about me. Some of the kids were saying that I flirted with the other boy from the day before and someone told Oscar. Well, before I could get to him, one of my friends told me he wanted to break up with me… and so naturally like most kids do, we avoided each other for the rest of the time that camp was in session. School was about to start back up soon, and since we didn’t go to the same school, we forgot all about each other
Fast forwarding a couple years later, into my senior year, 2015, and his freshman year of college, we met again. During my last year in high school, I was legible to do a dual credit with my high school and go to classes at school for half the day and the other half I could take CNA classes at Rock Valley College, a local college, and it would count as credit in both schools. One day after class at RVC, I was walking with my best friend to leave, when we walked passed a classroom with a glass wall. As I glanced in the class, I noticed I recognized a guy sitting amongst the many students. We locked eyes for a brief moment but within those 2 seconds, I knew exactly who he was: Oscar. He still looked pretty much the same- cute, just his hair was shorter and he was wearing glasses. As I drove home, I began to wonder if I could track him down on Facebook (haha). As soon as I was home I started searching for him on my phone. I didn’t know his last name, but I hoped he would be within the first few people to pop up if I just put in his first name. And to my luck he did. I saw that he didn’t have a girlfriend, so I sent him a quick message about how I just saw him at school. One thing led to another and we liked each other so much that we started dating (again) on April 13th, 2015. One of the happiest dates of my life!
how they asked
Towards the end of summer in August 2017, my family and I decided to take a trip before classes started back up again. My mom also thought It would be a great idea to invite Oscar long. Of course, I was excited about the idea! We decided to go to Destin, Florida because we heard the beaches were great and we love Florida in general so it was the perfect spot! We stayed there for about a week and we had an amazing time: eating at new places, going on boat rides and seeing dolphins, and of course getting to lay on the beach. It was all just perfect. On our last night there, Oscar bought a vase that he could collect some sand and shells and bring it back home to his mom so we went walking on the beach, just the two of us. About 30 minutes later, we decide that he got enough shells and started to head back to the hotel room. As we are walking back up, Oscar begins to tell me that he came across a big clam this morning while we were on the beach. I was amazed and asked him why he didn’t show me at the time. He said he didn’t think it was anything special until he seen what was inside of the clam. Jokingly I said what like a pearl, and he said well kind of. Then he turned towards me with a clam in his hand and started to get down on one knee.. I was completely shocked and confused as to what he was doing. And then he opened up the calm and a beautiful ring was inside and at that moment my heart started to skip beats and race like crazy! He told me how much he loved me and wanted to do nothing more than to have me be in his life for the rest of our lives… the love of my life asked me to marry him… and of course, I said YES! On August 2nd, 2017, right on the Florida beach, I said yes to the love of my life and I can’t wait until I get to say I Do!
