How We Met
Justin and I met on September 21, 2013 at my best friend/maid of honor, Jordan Smith’s house. We were celebrating Jordan turning 21 and watching the Alabama vs. Colorado State game. I was aggravated that day because I hate watching football with people besides my grandfather. It is nothing personal, it’s just a special thing that we do every Saturday. However, since we were celebrating Jor’s 21st I knew I had to tough it out for one game day. Thank goodness I did! About halfway into the first quarter walked in this random (really good looking) guy with my UAH teammate/friend Morgan Duncan, and he introduced himself as “Wilson”. Most people call Justin by his last name “Wilson” and at first I thought that was his real name! We spent the remainder of the game laughing and getting to know each other. I couldn’t get over how easy it was talking to him, and I couldn’t help but have a major crush on him. Unfortunately, not long after the game was over, he left and I thought I would never see/hear from him again. Luckily, a few days later, I got a message from him, and a couple of weeks later we went on our first date. We had a great time on the date, and I was anxiously awaiting for our next date… little did I know how long I would have to wait for that next date.
Not long after Justin and I went on our first date, he text me and told me he was going into the Marines. We had talked pretty regularly after our first date, and I thought things were going well for us… that was until I received a text that said, “Hey I’ve got to tell you something… I’m going into the Marines”. Talk about a total out of the blue shocker for me. I realized very quickly that our relationship was never going to grow into something that I had hoped it would. I was in the middle of college and playing basketball at UAH. There was absolutely no way to make a long distance military relationship work, so things ended right then and there. He left for boot camp in April 2014 and I focused on finishing school, basketball, starting my coaching career, and my professional career.
Over the next year and a half, I would randomly hear from Justin via text message or Snapchat. We would catch up for a couple weeks then I wouldn’t hear from him for a few months. This continued until December 12th, 2015. He text me that evening and asked me how I was doing and when I was graduating from college (strangely enough I was graduating the next day). Justin was coming home for leave during the holidays, and asked me to hang out with him one day while he was home. We had our second “first day” on January 2nd, 2016. We spent the evening enjoying a bonfire at his house and catching up on everything that had happened over the last year and a half. I fell hard for him that night, and he officially asked me to be his girlfriend on January 10th, 2016.
how they asked
October 2nd, 2017 started out like any other day. I went to work that morning while Justin slept in (he had just gotten back from a 7 month deployment so he was at home on leave). During the day, he had text me and asked me how my day was going. I asked him what he was up to and he told me that he and his dad were burning down a big brush pile of trash. I told him not to burn all of it because I wanted to sit by the fire that night when I got home from work! We love having bonfires and I love reminiscing on our second “first date” (Little did I know Justin was burning down this big pile of trash so it would look better for the pictures when he proposed to me).
When I got back to his house after work, nothing was out of the ordinary. I had known Justin was planning to propose to me soon, I just didn’t know how soon it would happen… That evening, I went outside to play with Bo (our precious fur baby) and was hanging out by the fire that was conveniently still going strong. Justin met me down there in his truck, and turned the radio on that was in their shed (I later found out he was praying for one of our songs to come on the radio while he proposed to me). We sat by the bonfire for what felt like forever and just talked about our relationship, how much it has grown since that September day when we first met, and how much we’ve overcame since then. The only thing that was driving me nuts was his phone kept going off and I couldn’t figure out who and why someone kept texting him during our “perfect” moment. I found out quickly that it was his mom texting him. Justin had coordinated with his parents to drive to the back of their land where we were having our bonfire so they could take pictures of him proposing. They were supposed to be secretive about this, but as soon as Justin told them to come on, they floored their truck down there, parked directly behind us, and his mom jumped out of the car and screamed “Let me see it!” Unfortunately, Justin had not asked yet and I pretty much knew it was coming from that point on, I was just waiting to see how long it would take him to ask LOL!
After about 15 (very long and awkward at times) minutes go by, I finally looked at Justin and said, “It looks like your dad is killing time” and Justin looked at me and said yeah I think he is waiting on this… He got down on one knee, pulled out the prettiest ring I’ve ever seen, asked me to marry him, and I think I said yes.
I’m not really sure if I said anything at all. I felt like I blacked out as soon as I saw him drop to one knee. Overall, it was the most perfect day and I’m so blessed to get to spend the rest of my life beside his side!
