How We Met
Jesús and I met in the summer of 2011 when I started working at the same Apple Store that he did. I was actually interested in another guy and Jesús said that he would hook us up. One night, the three of us planned to go out together and get drinks. Jesús and I got off at the same time so we went to get dinner while we waited for the other guy to get off. In that time, we talked and I mysteriously opened up to him and told him, frankly, more than anyone should tell someone their first dinner together. But he made me feel so comfortable and I kind of forgot about the other guy. The whole rest of the night all of my attention was on Jesús and we spent practically every night that summer together, until I had to go back to school in New York; he had become my best friend. Over the next few years we kind of kept an open, long-distance relationship until August 28, 2014 when we agreed that we didn’t want to be with anyone else.
how they asked
We decided to celebrate our one-year anniversary with a vacation to LA. One night, while driving back to the hotel, Jesús asked if I wanted to go up to the roof. I guess he had gone up to check it out that morning while I was getting dressed, because I didn’t even know there was a roof. In the elevator, he told me to go ahead up to the roof while he stopped at the room to “get something”. I sat down on one of the pool chairs and admired the beautiful 360º view of the city. He came up with my Jambox playing “I Can’t Help Falling In Love” by Elvis Presley, reached for my hand, I stood up and he held me close. After a long hug, he knelt down and opened a ring box. Neither one of us said anything; I just stared at the ring with a shocked smile on my face. Eventually, he said, “Well…?” and of course I responded, “Yes! Yes!” During a heartfelt kiss, he suddenly reached for his back; something had bit him. He pulled an albino praying mantis from his back. We’ve never been a very romantic couple so I guess we needing something to break up the mood. Haha.
