how we met

Like many young people in New York City, Grant and I met online, prior to the mobile dating app frenzy. Thanks to a fantastic algorithm, we were each other’s first dates on this particular dating website. The site said we were a 99% match!
Our first date was over a beer in Madison Square Park; we nursed those brews for 4 hours. Two days later we met for brunch, two days after that I met him and his friends at some food trucks under the Highline (I was “conveniently” in the area), and two days after that, well… You get the idea. Grant and I fell fast and hard. And here we are nearly 5 years later.

how they asked

As a same-sex couple, we get asked pretty regularly about customs when it comes to marriage… As if we are the experts. The truth is, we have no idea what the customs are, if they even exist. That said, I made it clear from the beginning that Grant would be the one getting down on one knee. Little did he know…

Fast forward to an absolutely beautiful October day in Brooklyn. The morning started off like most Saturdays. We went to 9am yoga with our favorite instructor (Lindsay Carson if any New Yorkers are looking for an amazing practice), followed by brunch at our favorite neighborhood haunt, Chez Moi. Brunch was followed by the most memorable walk of my life, along with our French Bulldog, Gracie.

On the corner of State and Hicks, I asked Grant to spend the rest of his life with me. I don’t quite remember what I said. Despite countless rehearsals, it all turned to mush as soon as I started speaking. Thankfully he said yes. In fact, I think he took the ring out of my hands before I could even get the words “Will you marry me?” out of my mouth.

Once we both composed ourselves, I asked that Grant not text or call friends or family for a few hours; my excuse was that I wanted to enjoy the moment together without interruption. Little did he know that our closest family and friends from across the country were waiting in a bar down the street. Grant is not much of a crier, but I really got him good with this one. It was the most joyful day of our lives, and we can’t wait to share many more joyful moments together.
