How We Met
Cole and I have been family friends since I was in 3rd grade, but we never became close friends because he was a couple years older than me. I always thought he was cute, but nothing ever really came of it. When Cole was a senior and I was a sophomore in high school, he asked me to Prom as a friend by putting wildflowers and a framed chalkboard on my doorstep that said “May I have this Dance?”. It was my first date ever, and I was SO nervous because I thought he was so cute. The night was so fun, and I had the biggest crush on him. Time went on, he graduated, and we went separate ways. Fast forward a couple years, and I am going to college in Utah and him in Idaho. Toward the end of the school year, I received a phone call from him asking to grab breakfast. I was surprised to hear from him because so much time had passed, but I was excited to connect with him again. Long story short, breakfast went great, and we started dating that summer. Once the summer came to an end, we were faced with the reality that we attended universities in different states, which would prove difficult to continue dating. We both really wanted to make things work, but we did not know how. Cole told me he would do whatever it would take to make it work, so he started driving to Utah every single weekend for 10 weeks straight. Every week I would count down the days until I could see him again. At the end of the 10 weeks, he told me that he had decided to move to Utah! With both of us being in the same state, everything was able to move much more quickly and Cole quickly became my best friend.
how they asked
On Valentines morning, I woke up to find wildflowers and a card from Cole on my kitchen counter that he had dropped off before heading to work. In the card, he told me to be ready to go on an adventure when he got home and ended the card with the phrase “May I have this Dance?”. ( A phrase that he used to ask me on my very first date years earlier). Later that day, Cole and I drove to Bryce Canyon National Park, a place we had been wanting to visit together for a while now. When we arrived we found that we were basically the only people at the park that day. It was amazing because we had the entire place to ourselves. We drove to all of the lookout points and walked down to see some of the views up close. Various times throughout the day, we set up a tripod with a self timer so we could get photos with both of us in them. As the sun was setting, we decided to take a couple last photos before we drove home. We walked out towards the ledge and pressed the self timer, and all of a sudden Cole dropped down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was so surprised, and I when I said yes, I started bawling and all I could do was hug him over and over again. I love him so much! When we got back to our car, Cole showed me a globe that he had hand painted for me that says “And so the adventure begins”. We have always talked and dreamed about traveling and adventuring together, and the globe was the most perfect way to symbolize “our beginning”. It was the most perfect day , and I am so happy I was able to get engaged to my best friend in such a beautiful place.
