Celina and Sam

How We Met

We first met each other in middle school, shortly after I had just moved to Chapel Hill, NC. In February 2009, Sam asked me to be his girlfriend after track practice. I told him “I need to think about it. I’ll let you know.”

Almost a week later, we ran into each other in the nurse’s office, and he asked me “is it a yes or a no?” – I told him it was a “yes!”

This was the start of our story. We grew up together and became best friends. Sam was one year older than I was, so when college rolled around, he left for the University of Pennsylvania. The distance was definitely hard for us. But, we soon realized that distance couldn’t keep us apart. A few semesters later, in the spring of my freshman year in college, Sam transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill, and from then on, we are inseparable.

How They Asked

We decided to go to Bali in September for our vacation and my birthday trip (my birthday is September 18). On September 17, my middle school sweetheart asked me to spend forever with him. All-day leading up to this proposal, Sam made me believe he was just planning a spectacular birthday dinner for my birthday, so I went along with it.

We were completely jet-lagged that night, so I didn’t think much about it when he said he was leaving our villa early to make sure it was all set up for me and to take the golf cart down at 6:45 pm. As I walked down a path to the private beach, I saw little lanterns leading the way. And there he was. Standing there next to the bonfire.
