How We Met
Mikey and I first met in 2008 as freshmen in High School. I had the biggest crush on him but it was soon obvious that we were more compatible as friends. Throughout High School, we were best friends and had numerous classes together. He’d copy my homework assignments occasionally and I’d help him in Algebra when he so desperately needed to pass the next exam. We shared secrets and inside jokes. He truly was my best friend and he still is! During our High School days, we had a standing Thursday night “friend date” at the Pizza Shoppe in town where we would go and get all you can eat pizza and a soda for super cheap and to this day it is one of my fondest memories. After our senior year we ended up going to different colleges but we made sure to stay in touch. I’d visit him at William Paterson where he played soccer and whenever we were both home visiting we made sure to get together to catch up on the newest part of our lives.
During our sophomore year of college, we met up on my campus at Montclair State and decided that for that upcoming weekend we would get together for a throwback friend date. We went to Buffalo Wild Wings and then to a movie. I remember during the movie Mikey gasped and turned to me and said “I forgot to pay my bill at dinner we need to go back.” I couldn’t help but laugh at him! After the movie, we drove back to Buffalo Wild Wings and Mikey ran inside to settle up (we still joke about it to this day). As we were driving home I turned to Mikey and told him I had so much fun and with a lump in my throat asked him why we never gave us a chance.
Mikey quickly turned me down and said that it would be weird and we were just friends. Ouch! I told him that sometimes best friends make the best lovers and we should forget what everyone else thinks and give us a chance. The rest of the drive home was filled with awkward silence. That night we went our separate ways and I woke up to a text from Mikey saying, “Okay – let’s give us a chance.” I was SHOCKED but over the moon excited. The first couple of weeks transitioning from friends to a couple was filled with weird encounters and awkward moments but here we are 7 years later and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
How They Asked
In April of 2019, Mikey and I bought our first home together and decided that for the Holiday that year we would send Holiday Cards to our family and friends. In July we adopted our furbaby Oliver and thought it would be perfect to include him in our Holiday Cards and that’s when I started looking for ideas and completely stumbled across a local photographer who did Holiday Mini’s specifically for Holiday Cards at a Christmas Tree Farm about twenty minutes from our house. I was so excited! I picked out our outfits and got Oliver a matching bandana but Mikey couldn’t even remember when the photos were, who was the photographer, or where the photos were being taken. All week I had to remind him numerous times what we were doing that Saturday and what time we had to be there.
When we woke up that day it was like any normal day. We got ready and we drove to the place and I did not once have any idea what was going to happen that day! When we pulled into the spot Taylor (our amazing photographer) showed us where we would be taking photos and it was the cutest spot. We started taking some photos and Taylor mentioned that she needed to go grab a new card for her camera so we could take more photos and finish up. I of course not realizing what was going on decided to go back to the car to get Oliver more treats so he would behave.
When I came back we took a few more photos and that’s when Mikey said he wanted to take a photo of us holding hands looking at each other. At the time I thought it was super weird and just turned around to hold his hands and then it got magical. Mikey took my hands in his and spoke from the heart and I blacked out! I couldn’t believe what was happening. Mikey then got down on one knee and asked if I would marry him and I said yes!!
Through tears in my eyes, he put the ring on my finger and we hugged until I heard “So is that a yes?!” and I turned around and through the bushes came my dad and my sister who was hiding watching the whole thing and got a pretty cute video! We spent the night with our friends and family celebrating at one of our favorite restaurants. November 9, 2019, is the day our new adventure began and I couldn’t be happier to be spending the rest of my life with my best friend.
