How We Met
Luke and I have been dating since we were seniors in high school. We met when we were juniors, I was 16, and he was 17. I managed the Varsity and Junior Varsity Boys’ Lacrosse teams on campus to fulfill my athletic requirements. This meant managing the equipment, jerseys, taking stats, and the oh so glamorous job of making sure the water bottles were always filled.
During practice, I often socialized with players on the team, one of which who happened to be Luke. Throughout the season, we grew to be better friends. I enjoyed going to practice because it meant I got to spend time with him. He often chose to sit on the bench with me, the water girl, instead of playing so he could talk to me. Eight and a half years later, here we are….
how they asked
Luke and I had been to the Huntington Library, Museum, and Gardens several times when we were in undergrad, and he knew I always wanted to have tea in the Rose Garden Tea Room. The week prior, he mentioned that it would be fun to do and said he would look into it. We agreed to a date there the following Sunday in the afternoon. Once we got there, we had some time before our reservation so we wandered through the Japanese and Chinese gardens.
We made it over to the Rose Room and stopped to look at some before tea. Throughout tea, Luke was constantly checking his phone and texting. When I asked about it, he told me he had bailed on a group project for his M.B.A. program and was giving his input to the team during their meeting remotely. I didn’t think much of it. After tea, we walked through the herb garden and Luke was unusually quiet.
We decided to go back into the Rose Garden again. I wanted to venture off to a row of bushes we hadn’t seen yet, but Luke was insistent that we re-visit a bush we had previously seen prior to tea. He began by hugging me and telling me how much he loved me. The next thing I knew he was down on one knee and it felt like the entire world had stopped and it was only me and him.
I immediately said yes and began to tear up. Soon after, I learned that he was not texting his group project team, rather, he was texting a photographer to make sure she was ready in place to capture our best memory so far. We spent the rest of the afternoon capturing our happiness together in the Rose Garden, which will forever hold a special place in my heart.
