How We Met
Jordan and I met in May of 2017. I had been in Las Vegas for 2 weeks competing at Miss USA, I was tired, I was mentally exhausted, and I had just recently decided I was DONE dating for a while. HA!! (God had other plans).
I had just flown back into the Kansas City airport from Vegas. I lived in Lawrence, KS at the time (about 45 minutes from Kansas City) and on my drive home I got a wild hair… and started swiping through Bumble. (Because when you’ve sworn off dating to “focus on yourself” you should definitely download a dating app…I digress LOL). I swiped right on a guy named Jordan. He was cute but we didn’t match (big bummer)!! So I get back to Lawrence, forget about the app, head back to work the next day and don’t think anything else of it. 2 days later I open the app again to see that I had in fact matched with Jordan later that day but the match expired because I hadn’t been on in 24hours (Big bummer. Again)! So I figure not meant to be, cool. Fast forward another 24 hours and I get a notification that Jordan extended the match. (in hopes I would message him). hehe
**(within bumble as a guy, girls have to make the first move and send you a message in order for you to be able to chat with them. Girls get 24hours to talk to someone they matched with. If you don’t talk to them in 24 hours the match expires. Bumble gives you one “extend” per day and you can extend one of your matches for another 24hours if you want.) still with me?? Ok! **
So at this point I’m like jeez… I guess I better say something to this guy. So I send him a message. [Modern day romance at it’s finest]. We chatted for hours via bumble and then he asked for my phone number. We texted for a while and then he actually CALLED me (Hell yeah! RIGHT?!).
We talked pretty much all day and night for about 4 days before he asked me on a date. He was going to come to Lawrence and we were supposed to go out to dinner. The day came for our date and he texts me 3 hours before and says “ahh so sorry, my tire blew out I can’t come!!” and I was like “Honestly if you don’t want to go out anymore its cool, no worries ?” And he goes “no I do. I just can’t drive 45 minutes on a donut!!” (and he sends me a photo of the tire to prove he’s not lying) haha
**DISCLAIMER….Please never do what I did in this next part coming up!! LOL**
So now that I know he’s telling the truth I’m like “no its fine, I’ll just come to you!” and he goes “Cool, if you want to come to my house we can just watch a movie and I’ll make dinner!” (okay Ted Bundy!) but away I went to Kansas City, to his HOME, to see him LOL [we lied to our parents about this first “date” for a year and a half. I knew I was dumb! Meeting someone online and then going to a strangers house…cute!]. He claims he told his roommate before I got there that “this woman is either seriously catfishing me and is going to kill me…or I’m going to marry her! One or the other!!” (We have since bonded over our mutual love of true crime!)
Side Note: When Jordan texted me for the first time and asked what I was up to I was watching a Jon Benet Ramsey documentary! That was our first conversation. A little dark… but it totally fits now.
All in all……he in fact was not a serial killer. We talked and hung out for 5 hours that night! I moved to Kansas City 2 months later for a new job, and we have been inseparable ever since!
How They Asked
Jordan and I knew from the very beginning that we were going to marry each other. (Even though it took him 2 ½ years to ask me!). We have talked about marriage A LOT more over the last year so I knew it was coming at some point, but NEVER could I have dreamed it up like this!!
For about 2 months I had been planning with my other siblings to all find a weekend to get together at my parents house since we are hardly all ever in the same place at the same time. We were supposed to do dinner on Friday night, and then family pictures and a birthday party for my nephew (who I hadn’t had the chance to meet yet) on Saturday. Typically when we go back to my parents house I wear comfy clothes since it s a 2 hour drive. But I had talked to my mom earlier in the week and she said “we’re probably going to go to a nice dinner Friday so don’t come dressed like you usually do!!” (haha thanks mom!)
I had a happy hour for work Friday which ran a little late so by the time I got home it was 5:30 and were supposed to leave at 5:30. I was rushing around, throwing things in my bag, threw a dress & boots on and jumped in the car!! I always told Jordan he could never surprise me. And I figured when it was going to happen I would know because he would act different and be super nervous. He’s not a good liar, and he definitely doesn’t like speaking or doing things in front of big groups. So I also assumed we would be alone somewhere. Which is why what happened next was the shock of my life!!
We drive the 2 hours back to my parents house and everything was completely normal the whole trip. We pull into the drive way, I get out, and we start bringing our bags into the house per usual. Jordan goes “I forgot something in the car I’ll be right back.” (he used this time to run around the side of the house and into the backyard). Not thinking anything of it I take my bags back to my bedroom and then come out and start chit chatting with my mom in the kitchen. I thought it was weird that the house was super quiet seeing as ALL my family was supposed to be there. So I asked my mom where everyone was. She goes “oh they’re all in the backyard hanging out”. And then she starts asking me to do a bunch of super weird stuff in the house like “can you go check on the dog quick.” Etc. etc. (which now I know…she was stalling). I come back from checking on the dog and using the bathroom and I’m like mom jeeez can we go outside and see everyone now?!
We walk out on the back deck and as we get to the stairs I hear Jordan and I’s song “You” by Johnny Balik start playing, I see my whole family, my uncle, and Jordan’s whole family lining a lit path to the gazebo in my parents backyard (the same backyard where he asked me to be his girlfriend, and we said I love you for the first time 2 ½ years ago). I then see Jordan standing waiting for me at the end of the path. It was INSTANT tears. I knew what was happening!! As I walked the path our family members each had notes that they read that Jordan had written to me about why he loved me. I sobbed uncontrollably with each note as I got closer to the end. When I finally got to the gazebo Jordan took my hand and said “Are you surprised?” (I said yes). “Are you happy?” (DUH!!) lol. And then he said “I want to continue to make you happy for the rest of your life. I have one more note for you.” And as he handed me the note that said “Will You Marry Me?” he got down on one knee and made me the happiest girl in the world!! Our families started cheering and it was the best moment of my entire life!! I was shocked, I was surprised, and being able to share this moment with our families was more than anything I could have ever dreamed of!!
