How We Met
Casey and I met in high school, I was a cheerleader and he was captain of the basketball team. I remember cheering at his games and he definitely caught my eye. He was known for being the smartest guy in school, who never talked to girls because he was so focused on his grades and basketball. Our junior year we finally had a class together, he was shy and didn’t talk much, but as the year went on I slowly began to notice that he would sit next to me in the computer lab and we would end up talking the whole period.
I, of course still thought he was the cutest guy in school and my feelings only grew stronger every time we talked. One day in class we were joking around and I told him that we would get married someday. I played it off as a joke but I had the strongest feeling God was telling me that he was the one for me. I had a talk with Casey’s best friend Roland and told him how I was feeling in hopes that he would relay the message to Casey. Not too long after Casey asked me to go to the movies over Facebook and I was completely shocked, the man of my dreams was actually asking me out.
Our first date could not have been any more perfect and I knew God put him in my life for a reason, we were inseparable from that moment on. We dated the remainder of high school and all college where we did long distance. Once Casey graduated he was offered an amazing position with the Golf Channel in Florida and we took the next step in our relationship and moved in together, at this point we had been together for the most amazing 6 years of my life.
how they asked
Casey had told me he was going on a business trip and we had just recently had our apartment broken into while we were home, so I was still not very comfortable staying alone just yet. He urged me to fly to Texas to surprise my Mom for her birthday and I thought it was a great excuse to see my family and avoid staying home alone. I called my Dad and we planned a whole surprise weekend for my Mom. My Dad told me he had already made dinner reservations at a very fancy restaurant and that I needed to dress really nice, he also said he would pay for us to get our nails done. I went out and bought a new dress and shoes and I had a friend gift wrap a box that I planned to get into it and pop out of when my mom opened the door.
I booked my flight to Texas based off of the times Casey was flying out for his business trip so we could go to the airport together (keep in mind Casey sent me a whole flight itinerary for his trip to “Wisconsin”). The morning of our flights we got ready, Casey was in full on work attire and he drove us to the airport where we had different terminals, he dropped me off and we said our goodbyes. As I was sitting at my gate we were texting back and forth, Casey told me he ran into some of his work friends at security and they were hanging out together which made me feel good because Casey isn’t a frequent flyer. Once I landed in Texas Casey sent me a picture of a Cubs t-shirt that he said he got during his layover in Chicago, and I sent him a video of me surprising my Mom at her front door and we didn’t talk much after that.
I spent the whole day with my sisters and my Mom, we went to lunch, got manicures and pedicures together which is rare because we are never all together in the same place, then we went home and started getting ready for our fancy dinner. Once we arrived I realized we weren’t at a restaurant and figured my Dad planned a private dinner for the whole family. As we were walking up I saw a trail of rose petals, I turned around and said “oh my gosh Mom, Dad put rose petals out for you” I noticed she had tears in her eyes, she took my hands and said “Nicole, today was all about me but, tonight is all about you.” They kissed me and told me to go.
As I was walking down the path I was telling myself that this wasn’t real life, I was in the most beautiful place with the most amazing view I have ever seen in San Antonio. I came to a door with a note that said “walk in, take a left, sit down and open the box, this is how much you mean to me” When I opened the door I couldn’t believe my eyes. A huge heart made of candles and rose petals, lights strung and the most beautiful sunset I had ever seen. I sat down and opened up the box, inside was a book. I opened it up to find 20 pages of the most beautiful, meaningful, and amazing love story I had ever read and it was ours.
Our whole relationship, every milestone and amazing adventure we had ever been on, written in Casey’s own words. The last page read “For her, it was a moment she had been waiting for her entire life and one that she would never forget. All she had to do was turn around.” And there he was, the man of my dreams walking towards me, I couldn’t hold back my tears and we shared the most amazing moment before he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him.
I am the luckiest girl in the world!!
