Casey and Chris

How We Met

The year was 2008 when us two middle school tweens started crushing on each other. Chris and I met in 8th-grade science class. Being from a small town it’s not very often that you wouldn’t know someone but I’ve never met this kid nicknamed Stove (Chris). I thought he was cute and funny but I didn’t want to come off too strong so I ended up asking his friend to be my lab partner. The marking periods went on and Chris, not once asked me for my number. So, my 13-year-old-self took matters into her own hands. Spring break was coming up so I asked him if he was going anyway for vacation and he said he’d be going to Daytona Beach.

So I said, “no way!! I’m going there too! Let’s exchange numbers so we can try to meet up while we’re down there.” Yeah… I was not going to Daytona Beach but my plan worked. To this day, I don’t think Chris knows about that. The year went on and he never made his move so I gave up trying. Juuuust kidding, I wouldn’t leave him alone. I even joined track to get his attention! It wasn’t until I got my braces taken off that he started talking to me. He’ll deny it to this day but the first ever text he sent me was “I saw you got your braces off.” Kid you not! We talked all summer and he finally worked up the courage to ask me out right before our freshmen year of high school in August 2008 – we’ve been together ever since.

how they asked

Chris planned a last minute trip to go skiing one weekend in March. I didn’t think much of it since we do that kind of stuff all the time. We drove up to the Catskills with beautiful snowy mountains thanks to the continuous snowstorms this winter. When we got there, he found a local Mexican restaurant for us to go to dinner (if you know me, you know how much I LOVE tacos and margaritas, mostly margaritas). After dinner, we walked around and took in the scenery. Chris started to ask me to take a picture and if there’s one thing I know about him is that he hates pictures. I kept saying we can take one tomorrow (when we were supposed to Ski) but he said he wanted one now since I “looked so beautiful” – obviously, I’m not saying no to that!

We’re setting up my iPhone, he starts making a makeshift tripod out a tree branch and in my head I’m like…why does he care about this picture so much? Should’ve known the second he asked to take a picture. Chris runs back over and starts saying all these sweet things, what do I say back? “So, are we going to take the picture?”

Moments later, he starts getting down on one knee and I was in utter shock. First of all, it takes A LOT to surprise me and second, he proposed!! All I could let out was “WHAT?!!” a few hundred times before I nodded my head yes. I’m still in shock, it was the best day of my life.
