How We Met
Caroline and I met on the first day of middle school in 2003. From the moment I met her, I knew there was something special about her. We actually started dating a shortly after, a middle school relationship that would only last a few days. Over the next eight years only my closest friends and family knew how in love with her I actually was. I was aware that she was way too out of my league so I never made any sort of attempt at being more than friends. Fast forward to 2012, I had all but given up on the idea of her and me. A bunch of our friends decided that we were going to spend Friday night at the Orioles’ game in Baltimore. I noticed that Caroline was acting differently towards me (in a great way) but given our history, I decided not to over think it and just acted normal. When I got home, I got a text from Caroline telling me that she “wished we could have hung out more tonight.” This was the text message that would change my life forever. I jumped on the opportunity and a few days later we were officially dating. After three years of living five hours apart and two years of living three hours apart, the girl of my dreams agreed to become my wife.
how they asked
A couple month’s back, Mike’s older brother called me and told me that he was going to surprise their family for their sister’s birthday the weekend of the 8th. I spent months keeping this surprise a secret from everyone, something that was very difficult for me. When he got home on Thursday, everyone seemed to be very surprised, so I knew I did well keeping the secret. Fortunately for me, Mike’s other sister is an esthetician, so Friday facials and manicures was nothing new for Mike’s Mom, sisters and me. Little did I know, there was a much bigger motive for this trip. That Saturday, Mike’s Mom planned a surprise party for his sister’s birthday. Mike and I grew up less than five minutes away so you can find us at either one of our houses at any time. This afternoon, Mike insisted on staying out of his Mom’s way while she got ready for this party. We spent the afternoon hanging out with our yellow lab, Bohdee. As we were about to leave for the party, Mike’s sister called and said she was going to take a walk to the bridge in the state park near his house but did not want to walk all the way back as she is five months pregnant, so she asked if we could pick her up on our way over.
When we got to the bridge, his sister was nowhere to be found so Mike and I took Bohdee up onto the bridge. This has been one of our favorite spots to take Bohdee on walks so it was ordinary for us to be there. There was a photographer on the bridge, but I did not think anything of this as it common to run into photographers taking pictures of the scenery. When we got to the middle of the bridge Mike stopped me and asked if he could take a picture of me. It was not until he kissed me, told me how much he loved me and pulled the ring box out of his pocket that I realized what was about to happen.
After fourteen years of friendship and five years of long distance, my best friend in the entire world asked me to marry him. Through many happy tears I said “Yes!!” and laid my eyes on the most beautiful ring in the world.
Knowing Mike, I should have known that this was not over. After taking a few pictures with the photographer, we walked to Mike’s car where he had a blindfold for me to put on. After driving for a few minutes we parked the car and got out. Mike led me a couple steps where he told me I could take my blindfold off.
I was blown away to find 80 of my family and closest friends standing right in front of me. We spent the rest of the night laughing and partying with all of the most important people in my life in one place. I never thought in a million years did I dream that my proposal would be so magical. Thankfully our pup is extremely photogenic, he really did his job well. (@bohdeemeetsworld on Instagram!)
The best two families in the entire world, together.
