How We Met
Jake and I met in Burma, of all places! I worked for a travel company and was heading on a 3 week trip to Thailand and Burma with a group of 6 other colleagues and their guests. I brought my best friend Jen, and a colleague of mine brought Jake. This was Jake’s first time out of the country, and it was impossible to not be excited by his excitement. He glowed with excitement, at each new destination, asking a ton of questions of our tour guide, eventually becoming buddy buddy with him. Jake and I hit it off right away, he told a story about taking his mother and grandmother to “Paint Nite” regularly, while buying multiple pieces from a local artist on the side of the road. I knew then I would marry him.
Jake arranged the sweetest date nights abroad, at each new destination we stopped at. Sometimes, it was moving chairs and a table up to the hotel rooftop, others it was star gazing on the docks along Inle Lake.
We came back home to Boston after those 3 weeks, and it was as if I had known him my whole life. Our relationship has been a blessing ever since. We truly do complete each other, support each other, and I have never seen a love like ours.
how they asked
I was traveling to Savannah, GA for work, and was going to make a long weekend of it, since my mom lives right downtown. I wanted Jake to join, but flights were insane due to President’s Day weekend and February school vacation, so I told him not to worry about it. One of my mom and I’s favorite things to do during our visits is to walk to the farmer’s market on Saturday mornings. the farmer’s market takes place in Forsyth Park, but we walk through about 6 historic squares surrounded by row houses and shaded by the Spanish moss on our way there. That is the best part of the walk.
I had just mentioned to my friend the week before how I would actually love a proposal in the square, never thinking it would happen so soon! I had been asking Jake regularly however, if “today was my day?”. Poor guy! My mom and I woke up, threw on our Lululemon gear, and got to walking. Needless to say, I was not proposal or picture ready! We were crossing the street into Whitefield Square, when I notice a man who looks a lot like… Jake! At that moment, I knew. I turned to face my mom, yelled at her for not telling me to shower before our walk, and headed straight to my love.
Jake was under a gazebo, standing with red roses, and playing “our song”. He then sat me down on the bench and showed me a book he had made, full of pictures and memories from our entire relationship thus far. He chose a few candid photos, so there were some moments of laughter for sure. The last page of the book read ” Local legend promises a lifetime of true love to those who share a kiss in Whitefield Square…. Today is your day!!!”
At that point Jake pulled me to my feet and asked me to marry him, I couldn’t have been happier. Of course I said yes, as he placed the most gorgeous ring I had ever seen onto my hand.
He was also perfectly prepared with champagne for us all; my mom and sister were there for the proposal as well, which meant the absolute world to me. He had also arranged for a photographer to capture the moment, and that she did!
