How We Met
Frietz and I met each other while we were both going to school in Hawaii. We were invited to a game night a mutual friend was hosting. To be honest, that first meeting didn’t seem extremely significant. It wasn’t love at first sight, no feelings were developed, but something that happened that night helped create an instant connection to each other. I am a very loud, outgoing person, and that night I was insanely hyper. Perhaps it was the cookies that we were eating, or I was just in a really good mood, but that night I was just bouncing off the walls at my friends house. I knew everyone there, except Frietz, but he also seemed to know everyone. I thought, “That’s weird… Looks like I have to find out who he is.” I remember approaching him and striking up conversation. He was silly, and instantly made me laugh. The rest of the night I started calling him, “my new best friend,” instead of Frietz. Every game we played I would look at him and proclaim, “BEST FRIENDS!” He laughed and played along. I’m sure he thought I was weird, but I didn’t really care, because I never thought I’d hang out with him again. I left the game night early, and that was that. The story was over right? Oh, was I wrong…
After that, we would constantly run into each other. Perhaps it was just a coincidence, but I like to think it was fate. Every time we saw each other, he would always take time to talk to me and he made me laugh so much. I would always make sure to mention something about being “best friends.” We eventually exchanged phone numbers. I found out that Frietz was an adventurous guy. (I mean, extremely adventurous). He had traveled many places, he hiked a lot, and he just had this burning desire to conquer the world. I wasn’t as adventurous as him in the beginning. I am now, but it took some time. I think his passion for living life and the way he viewed the world really sparked my interest. I remember in the first few weeks of dating, we were sitting parked outside my house late one night, talking and laughing. I remember saying, “I just feel bad that I’m keeping you from all your adventures.” He smiled and then said, “You are my new adventure.”
how they asked
The way Frietz proposed to me was unbelievable. What happened leading up to it is important to understand. I was visiting family in Utah. He was in Hawaii. We were both going to meet up in Arizona. We would talk every day while apart. I started to notice he would call me less frequently a few days before he proposed to me. At the time I didn’t really understand why. I would ask him questions, and he was extremely vague. To be honest, I was annoyed with him, but I figured we would talk about it once we met up in Arizona. Little did I know, he wasn’t in Hawaii, but he was on his way Utah to propose.
Frietz flew from Hawaii to Las Vegas, and had his friend Austin drive him up to Utah. Once he reached Utah, another friend of his, Brennen, picked him up. Every part of his journey, he recorded on his phone (which he later compiled into a hilarious video). The day before I was supposed to fly to Arizona, my parents dropped me off with Brennen, who agreed to take me to the airport the next day. I had no idea that Frietz was only a few miles away from me, waiting till the evening to surprise me.
All day, Brennen “stalled” me. He told me that he had this elaborate plan to surprise his girlfriend, Amanda, with a photoshoot on top of a mountain that overlooks all of Utah County. Me being a photographer, agreed right away. It sounded fun. I spent the day with Brennen and Amanda. The sun was starting to set, so Brennen, Amanda, and I all headed up the mountain. We pulled over and started walking up a path through a forrest area. Once we were in a clearing, Brennen announced that both Amanda and I would put on blindfolds. I thought it was a little weird, but I figured he was just trying to make Amanda think that I had nothing to do with the surprise for her. The blindfolds were on, and Brennen directed us as we moved forward. It was really funny because there was so many rocks and bushes. We laughing and yelling all the way up.
Once we reached “the spot,” Brennen told me to stay where I was with my blindfold on. I didn’t hear Amanda anymore, so I started to become curious. I didn’t know what was going on. I just stood there, confused, when all of a sudden I felt hands on my arms. They grabbed me gently, and without even taking my blindfold off, I knew it was Frietz by the way he touched me. My heart started pounding, and I began to cry. I was so confused, so happy, and so excited. Frietz was in Utah? He was supposed to be in Hawaii heading to Arizona to meet me! My blindfold came off, and there he was, smiling at me. I was speechless. I looked around and noticed the view. We were high up in the mountain and the sun was just going down, making the whole valley a golden color. I looked at Frietz and then he got down on one knee, opened a ring box, and asked me to marry him. I was so overwhelmed I could barely make a noise. I softly replied, “yes,” and then he said, “Caressa, you have to say it louder.” I laughed and cried, “YES!”
