Caraigh and Fabio
How We Met
Fabio and I met in highschool. He was 17 and I was 16. We were in the same Law class and shamelessly flirted for months. It wasn’t until I made the Senior Girls Soccer team (which he was the assistant coach for) that things really took off for us! We were kids at the time and little did I know that the boy that offered to give me piggy-back rides to soccer practice, would one day be the man I was going to marry!
how they asked
Fabio and I have known each other since highschool, we dated for a bit and then took almost 5 years apart to explore the world and experience life as individuals. I’m happy that we took that time apart to grow as people and realize that we were each others forever because when we got back together, I knew it was for the long run.
I always told Fabio that I wanted to be proposed to on a beach because the water is my happy place. Seeing as I work in the travel industry and we get to travel quite a bit, I always assumed a beach proposal would be somewhere hot and tropical. He mentioned to me a few years ago that he always wanted to propose here in Vancouver because Canada is where we met and fell in love. So with that being said, I let that vision of a beach proposal fly away and was super surprised when the day finally came and boom…we were on a beach!
The day was November 10, 2017 and we had a date day planned because it was a long weekend and we both finally had a day off together. We went for a nice lunch on the seawall and then Fabio suggested we go for a drive through Stanley Park. I thought “Oh how Vancouver of us…” It wasn’t until he pulled into the parking lot at Third Beach and he went into the back of his car and pulled out a blanket and black bag that I thought he was up to something. As we sat on the beach, he pulled out a bottle of Pinot Grigio (my favourite!) and poured me a glass of wine while we chit-chatted, snuggled under a blanket on one of the logs, while watching the water crash up along the beach. It was a crisp Fall day with clear blue skies and not a rain drop in view, which is very rare for November in Vancouver. Its like mother nature knew not to mess up this day that I had been waiting the last five and a half years for! Since the beach was a little busy, Fabio suggested we go for a little walk down the seawall, which we did. Then when I asked him what the plan was for later on, he replied with “Well the sunsets at 4:46pm tonight so we need to be back to the beach for then.” I thought it was weird that he knew the sunset down to the minute but again, had a little voice in my head saying not to get my hopes up. So after a little walk, we headed back to the beach and sat down on a log. All bundled in our winter coats, watching the sunset over the water with the Vancouver skyline in the background, was everything I wished my proposal to be and more! Fabio stood up, told me to stand up and said he had something to give me. I literally felt like we were teenagers so many years ago, when he was about to first tell me he loved me and the butterflies in my stomach were going absolutely crazy. I love that after so much time together, he still has that effect on me. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a…card. I giggled to myself because I knew it was too good to be true. He asked me to read the card out loud and as I did, I flipped to the inside and saw that he had written, “And with that all being said…I have one last question to ask you…” I looked over at him and he was on one knee in the sand! I think I just kept saying “Omg is this really happening?!” He looked at me and said, “Caraigh, you’ve been waiting a long time for this and this is the biggest question of them all. I love you so much. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” All I remember is putting the card on his knee and asking is this actually happening over and over again. Then he opened up the ring box and I screamed “Holy crap the ring!!!” He laughed and asked if that was a yes. I grabbed his face between my palms and looked into his eyes and said “Yes, of course!”
I have never been so happy in my entire life than in the moment that he asked me to be his wife. He is my best friend and I have loved him since I was 16 and feel so lucky to have a love story like we do.
