Cacey and Steven

February 18th, 2014 was just supposed to be another typical work day for me in sunny San Diego, California. Being a dental hygienist, I looked forward to seeing my patients every day, but I had no idea that this particular day would change my life forever.

I woke up late that morning, and knew I didn’t have time to shower without being late for work, so what did I do? Threw my hair in a messy bun, grabbed a pair of wrinkled scrubs from the drier, and with no makeup I ran out the door – rushing to get my daughter Tenley to preschool on time and still make it to work before my 1st patient got there! Luckily, I made it! Feeling so rushed that morning, the first 2 hours were a blur, but then it happened! “Steven” I said, as I made my way into the waiting room to get my next patient. He looked up at me and smiled- the sweetest, most sincere smile I have ever seen. He was wearing a royal blue dri-fit t-shirt, black shorts and blue shoes- all Nike (had to be an athlete). He took his time getting up, but never broke eye contact with me. I remember that moment so clearly; he completely took my breath away. I knew that this appointment would be a special one!

All of my patients were “new” to me as I had just started working there in January, after walking in to the wrong office for an interview. For those of you who don’t know, California has about 10 dental offices on every block. I was supposed to have an interview with the dentist next door and Dr. Lysander just “happened to be looking for a hygienist herself.” We hit things off immediately, and I ended up accepting the position shortly after. I knew at the time it was a God-send, but I had no idea that not only did God give me the perfect job, but that I would meet my future husband there as well.

So back to the story…..

On the walk back to my operatory I remember thinking to myself, “Great, why couldn’t you have just woke up when the alarm went off this morning! Or at least thrown on some mascara!!!” But he didn’t seem to care. I could tell he was attracted to me, but figured there was NO WAY this guy was single.

Luckily, I was wrong. We spent the next hour talking about everything from our childhoods to baseball (he plays minor league ball for the Milwaukee Brewers) to Christ. I told him I would look him up on Facebook so that I could follow his career. I added him that day, and the next night I received a message telling me how much he enjoyed meeting me and the conversation that we had – he had never met a girl who loved baseball as much as I do.

We haven’t missed a day since – whether it was phone calls, texts, FaceTime, or date nights, he always made time for me! He left shortly after we met for Spring training in Phoenix, Tenley & I spent every weekend in March driving back and forth to watch him play.

Being a baseball wife/girlfriend is not as easy as I thought it would be. Long distance is terrible, and traveling to WI to watch him play every 2 weeks was just not enough! We ended up moving to Wisconsin with him in early May so that we could spend more time together, little did I know, he was planning on spending the rest of his life with me!

Falling in love with him was so easy – some say that we are moving too fast, but “when you know, you know!” I am so lucky to be marrying this man and I KNOW God made him just for me!

how they asked: As mentioned before, Steven plays minor league baseball. Currently he is with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, a single A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. We had just got back to Appleton that morning around 4:00 a.m after a 9 game away series in Illinois and Iowa. We had traveled all night, and I was exhausted! When I found out that Steven wasn’t on the roster that night I almost stayed home, but he was adamant that I should go because it was the 1st fireworks night of the season and Tenley really wanted to see it, so I went anyway.

We arrived at the field right before game time, and it was PACKED! I had never seen so many fans there. We sat in our usual seats with Sascha, one of the wives and now one of my great friends. After the game ended, all the fans stayed seated to wait on the fireworks to begin. the announcer directed everyone’s attention to the big screen for a “special message”. After going to 30+ games this season, I had pretty much memorized all of the promotional videos that were displayed, so I didn’t even glance up…until I heard Stevens voice.

Steven had made a video prior to that night with was playing across the jumbotron saying: “Hey fans, I’m Steven Halcomb, and tonight I’m going to need a bit of help from you guys, so get out your phones and cameras, and you’ll know what to do in just a bit.”

Music began to play and a slideshow of pictures of Steven, Tenley, and I were playing. By this time I was already tearing up and Sascha directed me to start moving toward the dugout. Making our way through the fans I tried but failed to find Steven anywhere. Then the prerecorded video of him came back on the big screen saying: “Cacey, from the day I met you, you’ve been the best part of my life. You are my absolute best friend, and I can’t wait to spend every single day with you for the rest of my life. I want to see us through, so if you’ll meet me on top of the dugout I have something to ask you.”

My heart was racing so fast as I climbed up on the dugout. I was shaking, trying to hold back the tears, as the man I love was walking toward me. The moment I had dreamed about since I was a little girl was about to take place, in front of 6000+ fans! Steven got down on one knee and said “will you marry me?”

I was still so overwhelmed I forgot to say YES until he stood and started putting the most beautiful ring I had ever seen on my left hand! He kissed me, and in that moment, all of the fans, the cameras, the noise – it all went away.

All I could think was how I was the luckiest girl in the entire world to be with this man. After I finally let go of him, he picked Tenley up from the edge of the dugout and fireworks began to light up the sky.

A proposal like that was something I had only seen in the movies – I never thought that it would happen to me. It was the perfect beginning to our new life together, and a day that I will never forget.
