How We Met
Iain and I met a little over three years ago while working on rhinos in South Africa. I was still in veterinary school and doing research in rhinos and he was volunteering with a veterinary program. We immediately hit it off, bonding over our love for wildlife and exchanged information. From the moment we met our connection was undeniable. Even though I was from Texas and he was from Australia we knew we would find a way to see each other again. We texted, talked on Skype and on the phone for 6 months until he was finally able to finish his work in South Africa and come and visit me in Texas. Our families joked that we had to travel across the country to find the person we love and then wait 186 days for our first date! We finally went on our first date, both incredibly nervous because we had only met in person twice before! The connection was still there and we started dating shortly after. We did long distance for 6 months while he finished working in South Africa and applied for his American Visa. He finally moved to Texas two years ago, I finished Veterinary School and we started our life together in Fredericksburg, Texas!
“Distance is not for the fearful, it’s for the bold. It’s for those who are willing to spend a lot of time alone in exchange for a little time with the one they love. It’s for those who know a good thing when they see it, even if they don’t see it nearly enough” – Meghan Daum
how they asked
We both love hiking and the outdoors so while visiting his family in Australia Iain planned a trip for us to visit a nearby waterfall. When we got to the waterfall he sneakily set up our cameras while I napped in the hammock and then called me over to take a picture with him. Once we posed for our picture he started telling me how much he loved me and how he knew he loved me from the first time we met and then he ended with “I have a question I’ve been wanting to ask you.” I started uncontrollably crying because I was so shocked and surprised. He had to tell me later what all he said in the moment because I honestly don’t remember anything but saying yes!
The funniest part is that on the way to Australia his bag got searched at security and he was freaking out and sent me off to check our flight at the gate – he was so worried the person checking his bag would pull the ring out in front of me and spoil the whole surprise. I couldn’t figure out why he was freaking out about his bag getting searched, but it all made sense after the proposal!!
