How We Met
On a Thursday night, after a long and tiring week of work, my friend asked me to go with her to a local bar on Staten Island. Going out on Thursday nights began to become a ritual of ours, so as much as I didn’t want to go out – I felt bad canceling. I thought about giving her a million different excuses as to why I didn’t want to go. After an hour of contemplating my decision, I got up, got dressed and told her to come scoop me up. On the other side of town, Joe (then a stranger) was heading home from the city after a long day of work as well. His friend Anthony invited him out to that same local bar.. He had to wake up for work the next morning, planned to spend a couple of hours at the gym, and wanted to avoid going at all costs. Fortunately for the both of us, we sucked it up and decided to go.
I can honestly say, that was by far the best decision of both our lives. Joe was casually leaning up against a window in the bar as I walked in. He was the FIRST person I spotted. I don’t know what it was, but my eyes went directly to him. I walked over to the area he was standing, grabbed my friend, and started dancing. I could notice Joe’s eyes flashing back and forth at me. We both walked over to the bar, asked for a beer, and still – no words were exchanged. “Ok, whatever”, I thought. Back to dancing it was. I could see his friends urging him to talk to me, but he was too timid and too shy! Well, needless to say, after two LONG hours of dancing, and his inhibitions at bay, he finally worked up the courage to take my hand and ask me if I wanted to dance; we haven’t stopped dancing since.
how they asked
Fast forward to a Monday evening two 1/2 years later: Out of the blue, Joe mentioned to me that we would be attending what I *thought* was a tax dinner meet and greet before the start of tax season. He advised me that I should be dressed up, have my hair and nails done, because his boss was very judgmental of others appearances (eek). The “tax dinner” was being held at a beautiful local restaurant called The Stone House. I knew how beautiful this place was because we had been there once before. I figured it was a little too formal for a meet and greet, but I didn’t question anything. Joe knew I was stressing about what to wear since I’ve never been to an event like this before, so he offered to take me shopping to alleviate some of the stress. Little did I know, he was helping me pick out the outfit I’d be wearing for one of the biggest nights of my life. On Monday when we arrived at the Stone House, the waiter inside said we were the first to arrive. He suggested going outside to take pictures of the beautiful scenery while we waited. Me being me began complaining that it was too cold. The second we stepped outside, I forgot about the weather because I noticed everything all lit up: the trees, a fountain, a small cobble stone bridge, and a beautiful white gazebo.
I felt like I had walked out of the restaurant and stepped right into the perfect little fairy-tale picture. Little did I know, it was all set up for me. I just figured it was just a nice place since a lot of people have special events there. Joe walked me around as one of the workers inside followed us around taking pictures. After a few pictures, he finally walked me over to the gazebo, pulled me under, and said, “So, I have something to tell you, we’re not here for a tax party, we’re here because ….” and he got down on his knee!
A million amazing emotions came over me and I said “YES!” I couldn’t believe it; the man of my dreams just made all my dreams come true with one simple question! After that, he told me he had a surprise for me inside. We went in and everyone in the place started cheering and clapping. Joe took me hand and walked me up a spiral staircase to a beautiful candlelit room on a balcony that looked over the entire restaurant.
A million candles lit up the room, my favorite bottle of wine was placed on the table, a personal chef was waiting to cook my favorite meals right in front of us, and a live musician was setting the tone for the most amazing night of my life.
Romantic isn’t even the word. After a beautiful and PERFECT dinner, Joe told me there was one more surprise for me. We got into the car, and he told me we had to make a stop. We arrived at his parents’ house. At this point, I figured no one knew, so I thought we were going inside to tell his parents the great news. When I opened the door, our families were there congratulating us with the biggest smiles on their faces. I can honestly say I have never felt as loved as I did in that moment; I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with this wonderful man as he continues to sweep me off my feet over and over again!
