How We Met
Sayeed and I met in high school, around 2004. We were casual friends but never became close. We ended up going to prom together in 2006 and shared a kiss at the end of the night. I always found him intriguing, attractive, and sweet, but we never thought about dating one another and were never romantic. We lost touch in college as many teenagers do, and kept in contact with the occasional Facebook comment. On July 4, 2014, I saw him in a bar, and we started talking again. I fell in love with him immediately, especially after he was super supportive after my grandfather passed from pancreatic cancer, despite having not spoken to one another for years.
How They Asked
I absolutely love mermaids. When I was a toddler, my mom asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and my first and only choice was a mermaid! Last year, I entered a contest hosted by Bon & Viv Spiked Seltzer to win a custom mermaid costume designed by THE Ruth Carter, and won! In May, Sayeed told me we were going to New York but wouldn’t tell me why. He also mentioned that I needed to bring my costume. Come to find out, he was taking me to the Coney Island Mermaid Parade! I was in heaven!
The costumes were amazing, the energy was infectious, and I was having the time of my life on a perfect summer day surrounded by mermaids, sea creatures, and wildlings of all ages! We danced and we laughed throughout Coney Island, and when we were finished we decided to break away from the crowd, (it was HOT). Someone asked to take a picture with me, and when we finished, he asked if they could take a picture of us. That’s when he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!
