Brittany and Justin

ProposalHow We MetIt all started inside a police cruiser. As a reporter, I joined the citizen’s police academy in Abilene, Texas to learn more about the community that I was working in. Before graduating the class, I signed up to do a ride-along with a patrolman to see what police go through on the job. I waited for an hour before the officer came to pick me up. As soon as the door opened, I probably blushed. Out walks this gorgeous cop AKA my future fiancé. We got to know each other after spending four hours or so together inside the police cruiser that first night. We discovered we had mutual friends and found each other on Facebook…and then soon after that, we became inseparable.

How He Proposed: We knew early on that we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. So to say I didn’t seeing the proposal coming would be a lie. However, I was really thrown off as to the when! We went to Fort Worth, Texas for the weekend (May 7th, 2011 to be exact). We were scheduled to go on a hot air balloon ride, but thanks to the strong Texas winds, our ride got cancelled. Instead, we went out to a great Mexican restaurant for dinner. After dinner, we went back to freshen up (which I later learned would be for him to get the ring). We then headed to downtown Fort Worth. As soon as we got dropped off from the hotel’s shuttle, I see a line for a horse-drawn carriage, and I was like Justin, let’s go on a ride. He said not now and started to walk away from the line. Within seconds, he told me he’d already set up a horse-carriage ride for us, and that we were meeting the driver at the corner. It wasn’t really like Justin to plan things without me since we live together and make all plans together, but I just thought it was sweet.

So, here we are enjoying our carriage ride around downtown Fort Worth. After about 20 minutes, the driver says that she needs to stop and check the brake lights on the carriage. We were conveniently stopped by the Fort Worth Water Gardens park. She told us to go and enjoy a walk around the park, while she fixed the carriage. This is when the red flags went up; after all…I am a reporter ;)

My heart started to race, but truthfully I thought there is no way…there’s no way he’s proposing. So we walked around the outdoor park for about 10 minutes. He then grabbed my hand and led me down a flight of stairs, with water running down the side wall. As we were about to get to the bottom, he steps down and before I know it he is on one knee. I initially thought that he fell but then realized what was happening…

He said, Brittany, will you marry me? It happened so quickly and I immediately said, YES! He got up and of course, we kissed and hugged. He then says something along the lines of, “You said yes too fast – I didn’t really get to say what I wanted to say in the proposal.” I laughed and said, “Well since you’ve got the hard part out of the way and I’ve already said yes, tell me what you wanted to say!” He responded by telling me, “I love you, I want to have children with you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you…will you marry me?! Of course, I said YES all over again!
