How We Met: IT WAS A SET UP. It couldn’t have happened any better. Thank you to Caroline Rader and Caroline Fair for orchestrating the beginning of our relationship. Caroline Rader [CR] sent John [JS] a text message out of left field one day last year. The conversation went like this: “Am I completely crazy for trying to set you up? 05/22/2014 4:40PM
[JS] Not at all. I just haven’t spent a ton of time with her is all. Actually I think I may have met her two or three times? All at weddings possibly. Never actually had a conversation with her. Sounds like my loss up until now.
[CR] I will leave you with this… She is one of my best friends and I highly regard her in all areas of life.
This led to John asking Brittany on their first date, the first on a list below of a few date-highlights that are bound to be repeated over the years.
how they asked: Brittany’s closest friends from out of state kept a long secret. They booked flights to Dallas from New York, Charlotte, NC and Atlanta and came to surprise Brittany. Along with friends from Dallas and friends that lived outside of Dallas in Tyler and Abilene, Brittany’s sister came in from Austin and her Mom from Waco all on the morning of March 20th. The plan was for Brittany to enjoy the entire day with her closest friends preparing for a long awaited moment.
The girls that came in from out of town surprised Brittany that morning before she was planning on going to work. Caroline Fair set up a “walk” that morning to keep Brittany occupied. Brittany was surprised next by her Mom and Sister at Nardos Imam’s salon to try on dresses to potentially wear that night. She then met all of her soon-to-be bridesmaids at the Tea Room at Forty Five Ten for an early lunch before they went and got their nails done together. Maitee Miles met them at Brittany’s house to have her hair and makeup done before a car picked up Brittany and her sister Caroline to take them to the Rosewood Crescent Hotel.
Meanwhile, it was a very wet and rainy first day of spring. John had planned an engagement party in disguise of opening his recently expanded studio. Brittany even sent in her reply card to the invitation “Would not ever miss this! I love you!!!” Although the plan to go down to a knee in Prather Park was redirected to the Rosewood Crescent Hotel’s Garden Room (a pretty incredible plan B!) the setup was more than we could have dreamed or hoped for.
John first told Brittany he loved her in Santorini, Greece. He commissioned a painting for Brittany inspired by the place and colors of Santorini. In addition to a journal kept leading up to the proposal, the sapphire engagement ring carried meaning in its custom design and color. But most importantly… she said yes!
Showered with confetti, excitement and hugs, friends and family gathered for their entrance where Brittany had no clue who all would be at what she was expecting to be a work-event. Drinks were poured, signature cocktails were passed, and food was served while a jazz quartet played. It could not have been a more perfect night.
