How We Met

My fiancé and I met when he was in the military. I was a freshman in college and he had just got stationed in Beaufort, South Carolina. We had met through one of our mutual friends. I had a friend that was in the military and happened to be in the same squadron. I went to the barracks to see my friend and in the meantime, I met James. James was shy at first and had initially said he didn’t want to date anyone because he was going to be deploying in less than a year. We agreed that was fine but he still took me out to the movies and to dinner every now and then. We ended up falling in love, even though we tried not to, just because we knew how hard it would be to date while in the military. As we got to know each other more, our chance of meeting was quite amazing. James had broken his hip in boot camp and since he was originally from Minnesota, he was supposed to be stationed on the west coast in California. However, his hip breaking delayed his graduation and therefore he graduated with a different class and he got stationed in Beaufort, which was the last place he wanted. I was also about to attend college and had my heart set on a college, not in South Carolina. I last minute changed my mind and went to the College of Charleston. Knowing our backgrounds and the odds of us meeting, made it seem like fate.

how they asked

James asked me to marry him after he returned from his deployment back in 2016. One night he asked me if I wanted to go for a walk with him downtown. He bought me a dress and took me out to my favorite restaurant in town. He wanted it to be intimate and just between us so he proposed at the pineapple fountain in Charleston, South Carolina. This happened to be the place where he first told me he loved me. It has such a romantic feel and it was perfect! We had been dating for almost 2 years but almost half of that time, he was gone. We had both decided that we couldn’t be apart from each other and even though we would be physically apart, we didn’t want to be apart emotionally. Distance made our hearts grow fonder and I learned it takes a special kind of person to love a man in the military.
