Brianna and Brett

Over the summer, Brett and I had made plans to go to the Matchbox 20/Goo Goo Dolls concert at Blossom, Thursday 8/22/13 with our families. His cousin Kerri worked there and was getting us in for free! I was really excited!

The Sunday before the concert Kerri told Brett she wouldn’t be able to get us into the concert anymore because one of her friends got caught sneaking people in. To say the least I wasn’t too happy!

A few days later Brett called me saying that The Notre Dame football team was having an open practice to the public that Thursday 8/22/13. He was ridiculously excited because he would be able to meet the players and get autographs. He begged me to go saying this would be just as fun as the concert. Not so reassured I agreed to go!

During our 3 & a half hour drive I remember complaining to him if he was ever going to propose to me! Little did I know my ring was in his book bag in the back seat and I was in for a big suprise!

When we arrived it began to rain. Once again I complained saying how I didn’t want to get drenched watching the football team practice. Brett suggested we go to The Grotto before it started to get worse. We visit The Grotto every time we go to Notre Dame, so I didn’t think anything of it. I do remember him practically pushing me down the stairs though!

I walked into The Grotto and began looking at all of the lit candles. This was my favorite place at Notre Dame! As I was admiring the candles, I turned around and asked Brett for a dollar so I could light one of them. I continued walking and heard him fiddling in his bag so I just figured he was getting me a dollar.

A picture caught my eye and I approached it. I instantly recognized the couple in the picture frame. It was of Brett & I from one of our first trips to Notre Dame 4 years ago. Attached to the frame was a small sign that read “Will you marry me?”

My initial thought was “Oh my God! It’s happening right now!” I turned around to Brett, with a huge smile on his face, down on one knee with a small red box in his hand! I don’t remember word for word what he said but, I do remember him saying my full name and that he was sorry it took so long!

As Brett was proposing, I remember looking around and seeing a man taking pictures (who turned out to be Brett’s dad!) and a girl jogging by had stopped to take pictures as well. Of course I said yes! I remember shaking as Brett was placing my beautiful engagement ring on my finger. I instantly began hugging and kissing him!

Then I heard yelling! My mom, sisters and Brett’s parents all came running out from the trees with tears in their eyes! They had witnessed our whole proposal! I was so shocked, I began to cry! They were the last people I ever expected to see at Notre Dame!

After many hugs, tears, and pictures, we all went to an Irish pub to celebrate! It was the best day of my life and I was so thankful our families were apart of it!
