How We Met
I have known Wyatt since I was 14. We went to the same elementary and middle school but had never met since we were separated by one year. But when I started going to his church in ninth grade, we became such great friends! We played on the youth group worship band together and eventually just grew to trust one another more than we trusted most people. We started doing an internship together at the church we met at, meaning we spent about 2 hours together every day after school. After that, we started having an on and off relationship, but always remained good friends and we even went to prom together twice! We also always performed songs at our school’s talent shows (he played guitar, I sang).
One day we were sitting in his car after playing board games with my family a few days before Christmas. I was thinking of going to a school a couple of hours away from where you weren’t supposed to date in the first year (it was a bible school). We had been on and off about being together for such a long time and it felt as if we were going to truly end any potential relationship from occurring. Wyatt looked at me and said, “I can’t let you leave without doing this at least once” and he leaned towards me while Smashing Pumpkins was playing and kissed me! That was our first kiss, and after that, it sort of made me realize that he wasn’t just my friend anymore. I ended up going to another school that was only about one hour away and then we started dating on July 31st of 2015.
Since then, we’ve started a band called “Clavicle” together (He plays guitar/sings, I play synth/keys/sing), both have graduated college, made a zombie movie together, watched most of the ’80s horror series, always try to do great Halloween costumes and have explored so much of Atlanta. We have had such a fun life so far and cannot wait to be married!
How They Asked
So, we had been talking about getting married for a while and at this point,, we had been dating for almost five years. So when he picked me up I was really hoping tonight was the night he would ask! We went down our favorite area of Atlanta called Ponce at first and then pulled into a steakhouse called “Cuts” to eat. The staff there was so wonderful and gave us a seat by the fireplace since Wyatt requested that. We each ate a steak, yum!
After that, we drove down to Ponce City Market and he led me up to the elevator. I had never been up there before, but I had always wanted to see the city from there! I found out later Wyatt and my sister went up there to find the best spot for him to propose, which made my heart so full. So anyway, there was a DJ playing some random hip hop music and then all of the sudden, Luna by “Smashing Pumpkins” started playing and he led me up a flight of stairs.
Near the railing, there was a bouquet of roses and he turned to me. Honestly, I was so nervous and shocked, I felt like most of what he said went past my head! But I do remember him saying that we are best friends and that he didn’t want to live life with anyone else. He pulled out a black velvet box with the most beautiful ring in it! It was a raw diamond with a rose gold hammered band. He asked if I would marry him and I said “Yes!”
Right before he proposed, I saw this random woman sitting on a chair, but Wyatt drew my attention to him as soon as he started talking. After he proposed, the random woman sitting on a chair nearby got up and I realized it was my sister!! I hugged her and she took pictures of us on the roof. Afterward, we drove to his house where a lot of our family and friends were waiting for us to celebrate with coffee and donuts! It was such a wonderful night.
