How We Met
Joe has been my crush since I was seven years old. He has been my older brother’s best friend for 15 years. I used to make my parents take me to their basketball games so I could just see him and picture him as my Prince Charming, even though he barely knew I existed.
Since Joe is about 5 years older than I am, he graduated high school and moved to Texas with the rest of his family and we moved on.
Years later, Joe moved back to NY and moved in with my brother and his wife. Our family loves sports, and we really enjoy going to Indian’s games in Cleveland. By fate, Joe decided to attend one of the games with us. Somehow, we ended up sitting next to each other and the spark couldn’t have been anymore obvious. We flirted, smiled, laughed and we both knew there was something there. A few days later, he texted me and love took its course.
how they asked
I was driving home from school on a late Thursday evening wearing my usual attire; a hoodie, jeans and my converse. I live an hour away from where I attend school, and all I could do is think about what my boyfriend was making me for dinner. When I arrived back at the apartment, I opened the door and screamed “BABBAY, I’M HOME” like I usually do. What I didn’t realize is that I wasn’t coming home to dinner (like I was dreaming of), I was coming home to what became the greatest night of my life! When I walked fully in the door, there was a path of roses and a sign that read “follow the petals”. Still extremely confused, I filled the petals into our bedroom. Heart pounding, I looked on the bed where he had shaped a rose out of petals surrounding a Kays Jewelers box, chocolate covered strawberries, and a note (that I completely looked over at first). Opening the box as quickly as I could (hoping to find a huge rock) there was a note that read “run to the guest bedroom”. I did just that, and ran to the guest bedroom and whipped open the door. There was my boyfriend standing in a pile of rose petals, holding one single rose and playing in the background was our favorite song “All of Me”. Joe, with a huge smile on his face asked if I read the note. My heart sank. “What note?” I asked. Then starting to laugh hysterically Joe told me to go back to the bedroom and read the note. Our romantic evening then turned into what everyone describes us as, goofy. I ran back to the bedroom to read the note. The note was sweet, sentimental, and caring. But there was nothing about marrying me in it, so I was still extremely confused about this entire event. While reading as quickly as I could, Joe yelled from the other room, “tell me when you’re coming back!” I couldn’t stop laughing at this point. Getting closer to the end of the letter, Joe screams from the other room again, “Are you using the bathroom right now?” Not being able to catch my breath from laughter, I replied “No!”, then I told him I was returning to the guest bedroom. Reopening the door, he replayed our song and stood in the petals holding that single rose. Us standing there in silence for a few seconds, I finally said “Hi..” He smiled and responded, “Hi babe”. “What’s up?”, I asked. He told me he had something for me, while reaching to his back pocket. The box was so huge he struggled getting it out of his pocket, and I couldn’t stop giggling. He got on one knee and said “Briana Nichole, will you marry me?” Without responding “Yes!”, the first thing that came out of my mouth was “Did you ask my dad?!” Joe couldn’t hold his laughter back and he reassured me my father gave us his blessings. I started crying and told Joe that of course I would marry him.
This proposal was everything and more that I could have ever asked for. It had bits and pieces of romanticism in it, and spouts of our goofy selves. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
