How We Met
It was April 2016 and I was invited by Southwest Airlines to become a flight attendant for their incredible company. I had traveled from Phoenix, AZ to Dallas, TX to participate in five long, but rewarding weeks of training. During those weeks, I attended class Monday through Saturday at the flight attendant training building across the street from Southwest Headquarters in Dallas. One day, as I was lying in my hotel room, I did what any bored single 22 year-old would do, I downloaded Tinder…you know the dating app. I can’t help but cringe when I say that because we all know what Tinder is known for, but honestly I just wanted a good conversation with a nice guy. There were a few hopefuls, but no one really stood out…until I saw Michael’s page. He had a picture of him in the flight deck of a Boeing 737 and I couldn’t help but think, “A pilot, that’s cool. I’m in training to be a flight attendant.” I kept scrolling and noticed that he had mutual friends of mine.
It must have been a glitch because when I asked him if he knew so and so, he awkwardly said, “Nope.” Anyway, we got to talking and turns out he worked for Southwest Airlines as well, and bonus…he was Mormon too! What are the odds?! The weeks came and went. Before I knew it, it was graduation day! I was proudly dressed in my brand new flight attendant uniform. All I needed were my wings! I was having a conversation with one of my fellow classmates, when a very tall, (not to mention handsome) man walked up to me. It was Michael! Wow, was he a stud. His pictures didn’t do him much credit! He had his Southwest Airlines badge on and the brightest smile on his face. “Can I talk to you?” he said grinning. “Sure!” I said, feeling a bit nervous. “Are you stoked that you’re graduating today?! Congrats by the way, but I was wondering if I could get your number? I’m tired of Tinder and I’d love to get to know you more.” he said rather bluntly. “Well, sure but I’m moving back to Arizona.” I said. “That’s okay, I’d still like to talk to you!” he said eagerly.
We exchanged phone numbers and in a rather awkward and rushed moment, he blurted out, “Alright, I have to go back to lunch. Bye!” He walked away mid sentence, blushing, his cheeks were as red as a tomato and I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself. What a dork! A smokin’ hot dork. A month went by, and we had been texting /calling each other quite frequently. I would be settling into my hotel rooms in random cities, he would be driving home from work, and my phone would ring about the same time everyday. We were head over heels, and it was happening fast. One thing lead to another and we decided to move in together! I was making a move to the big D…and moving in with a guy I barely knew. Bad idea? Maybe, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I would make! Thanks to Tinder, of all things and of course Southwest Airlines, I was able to meet and become best friends with my future husband.
how they asked
What I adore about Michael is his thoughtfulness. Each week, he would make it a point to take me on some kind of date. He opens my doors for me, pulls out my chairs, and always lets me have the first bite! (Dreamboat, I know) Well, one particular day, he decided to take me to the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky! (Which was rare for this time of year) He had a backpack with him, which made me scratch my head. As we were walking around the gardens, trying to find a perfect place to sit, I ask “Why do you have a backpack?” “I have a blanket! And some food.” he says. “A picnic! How sweet!” I think to myself. “This should be fun!” We finally found the perfect spot facing White Rock Lake. We laid the blanket down and enjoyed a nice snack together. It was great. Then, Michael took out his iPad. “Why did you bring your iPad?” I asked confused. “I made something for you!” He said with a big smile. He then played the most amazing video highlighting all of our greatest adventures together, and our incredible love story.
In the middle of it, his heart started to pound extremely hard. “Are you okay?” I asked looking concerned. He couldn’t answer because he had been tearing up! At the end of the clip, Michael got down on one knee and popped the question! Before he could even put the ring on my hand, I jumped on him and shouted, “YES YES YES!” Shortly after, Michael confessed that he was a bit bummed that he couldn’t hire a photographer to capture the moment. We stood there together for a little bit just enjoying the moment, when a woman walked up to us. “Hi, I just witnessed what I think was an amazing proposal and I got some awesome shots of you two. Would you like me to send them to you?”
Michael and I looked at each other in awe and said with pure joy, “Yes!” We couldn’t believe the blessing she was to us! That day was truly amazing. Michael is my person and I couldn’t imagine life without him. We are both so grateful for each other and all of the support and love from our family and friends. And because of Southwest Airlines…and Tinder , we were able to meet and share our lives together in fantastic destinations! We have been on a lot of adventures and we plan on many more, but our story alone will be our greatest one of all!
