How We Met
My 25 birthday was right around the corner and my birthday plans fell through. I was just going to hang out and relax at home until my best friend told me she wouldn’t allow that. She picked me up and we went out for dinner and a few drinks. She invited some girlfriends that I knew and some people she went to high school with, Joe being one of them. I’d never met him before and he was across from me, but I was too shy to start a conversation with him. The night went on and we went dancing at another place. Joe and I started talking and laughing, but it wasn’t, love at first sight/conversation.
In the following weeks, he didn’t accept friend requests on social media and I knew right then I must have said or done something wrong. We were involved in a group text so he felt guilty (his words) & finally accepted my friend requests. A few weeks later he asked me to the movies. We started hanging out more. We started a softball team together. We were having a lot of fun. Then on October 10, 2014, he sent sunflowers to my work and asked me to officially be his girlfriend! I was ecstatic! Now here we are almost 5 years later.
How They Asked
March 21, 2019, Joe has my duffle bag on our bed with a letter addressed to me on top of it. I was so nervous because he used an envelope from my work. When I opened it up I was speechless. He had bought us tickets to the One Tree Hill Eyecon Convention!!! I also got to meet & take a photo with James Lafferty (aka Nathan Scott)! I was through the roof! The convention was being held in Wilmington, NC where the show had taken place. We got in the car that night and drove 10 hours. Saturday, March 23, was the day of the convention. I was so excited and nervous to meet James, little did I know Joe was nervous that day too. When we met James he was one of the most real and down to earth celebrities we’ve ever met. We stayed and heard some Q&A from Chad Michael Murray and the other cast. This was THE perfect day. When we left the convention we were going to dinner, so I thought.
We actually pulled up to the bridge in the opening credits of the show. We were there once before in 2015. Joe insisted that we had signed the bridge (I was confident that we had not). He made me read every single signature on that bridge, little did I know he was wasting time because there were a lot of other people on the bridge. I got to the end of the bridge and there was nothing from us so he gave me a marker. I wrote my favorite quote from the show: “Believe that dreams come true every day because they do”. Little did I know my wildest dream was a few minutes away. We walked back to the car and he was shaking, I didn’t think anything of it. The car was on and we were supposed to be leaving for dinner, but Joe just sat there. He turned off the car without saying anything and I was so confused.
I got back out of the car and he had said: “we forgot to take a picture with the selfie stick!” What…was he serious, I thought. So I went with it. He took me back to the spot I had just signed our names and the quote. I turned to look at the quote and when I turned back, he grabbed both my hands and said: “Breanna Marie you are my soulmate and my best friend”. At this point, I slightly pushed him back and said: “No no what are you doing what are you doing”. He was shaking and crying. I was crying and confused! He continued talking, all I remember was him saying he can’t live a day in this life without me & he got down on one knee. I said “Of course! YES, I’ll marry you!!!” I didn’t even look at the ring. He said “uhm did you want to look at it, can I put it on you?” It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. He designed it to look like a sunflower because that’s the first flower he ever gave me (and my favorite at that)! It was the most perfect day of my life and I could not be happier.
