How We Met
When I was going into 4th grade my parents decided to move us to a little town in CT called Warren. At that age, new people & new schools could be absolutely terrifying! Fast forward to being in my new school & on my new bus was where I first saw Rex. Now secretly all I was thinking was “He’s so cute!” But I never said anything. As the days went on all of a sudden he kept popping up out of nowhere and next thing I know would be sitting next to me. Again secretly freaking out “Oh my gosh this boy is so cute.” I lived really close to the school so the bus rides were never long at all. From 4th to 6th grade Rex continued to randomly pop up next to me on the bus still not knowing I had a crush on him, but he became my best friend. In 2005 it was time for 7th grade which was when I went to middle school & since we weren’t in the same grade….that was where we lost touch. Fast forward again to January of 2016 & I get a random message on Instagram & my heart stopped for a second. It was from are Rex. After 11 years we were finally in contact again & I couldn’t believe it. All those feelings from elementary school were back. Over the next couple of months we got really close again, hung out with each other every day, and when we weren’t together we were texting, calling or FaceTiming each other. No matter how long it was we were together it was never long enough. Here’s where things all start to come together. One day as we’re hanging out Rex decided to tell me how back in elementary school he had a crush on me but never said anything & then I told him how I felt & we were both completely mind blown that all these years of feeling the same way we both were too nervous to say anything to the other. Shortly after in March we finally started dating & everything in my life became so complete again! I knew at that moment this is the man that I want to & will marry!
How They Asked
Since I knew pretty early on Rex was the one, I was rather impatient about getting engaged! I just wanted to move on to the next step & start our lives & family together. I would steadily drop hints but in February of 2019, our worlds came to a stop when Rex’s dad was diagnosed with cancer & 3 short months later we lost him. After that Rex had told me how in February he was starting to plan out proposing to me and I was shocked but Rex’s dad was undoubtedly the main focus so things needed to be put on hold. He had pretty much lead me to believe that it wasn’t going to be anytime soon just because of how crazy things were. Which was totally understandable! When Rex & I used to talk about getting engaged I told him how there were 3 things to my dream proposal. 1. To have my dog Tyson involved in my proposal because that dog is my world. 2. Make sure someone is there to capture the moment & 3. Ask my Mom & Dad for their permission. December of 2019 rolls around things are crazy with Christmas coming, we had just gotten a puppy a few weeks before Christmas, the farthest thing from my mind was a proposal.
One day Rex had asked me if I wanted to start a new tradition together & every Sunday we would wake up early & go watch the sunrise down the road at Mohawk Mountain. I was so game, we’re early birds anyways & he knows how much I love sunrises & sunsets! The day before we were going to go watch the sunset Rex looked at me & says “Oh, by the way, I know you, you’re going to want to do your makeup” I thought that was odd because he always says how he prefers me to not wear my makeup because I don’t need it but seriously what good boyfriend/fiancé/husband wouldn’t say that? My mom had taken Tyson for the night which wasn’t unusual because he has sleepovers there all the time. We get up on Sunday, December 15th at 4:30 so I had time to shower and do my makeup, we were out the door by 6 a.m. We get to the top of Mohawk Mountain just us & the puppy & the sunrise was just starting. It was freezing outside, I was just saying to Rex how it was so cold and so windy. He asked if I wanted to get out of the car & I told him “not really it’s freezing out” he lets it go for a few minutes & then said “Come on let’s just get out for a minute” so I said okay & figured I’d just get a quick picture of the sunrise. We get out & Rex tells me to just wait a second & he’ll be right back, he’s just taking the puppy to go to the bathroom. Again, thought nothing of it.
A few minutes later next thing you know I see my mom, two of my best friends & Rex walking Tyson towards me while he’s holding Oakley, the puppy! They get close enough & I noticed Tyson was wearing a red bandana that said: “Will you marry my daddy?” & the puppy had a collar on with a tag also saying “Will you marry my daddy?” It all hit me right then & there what was happening.
Next thing you know the sky is gorgeous shades of hot pink, bright orange, & purple, Rex is down on one knee asking me to marry him & “YESSS” couldn’t come out of my mouth fast enough. And remember those 3 things for my dream proposal? That man pulled every single one of them off & more! I still can’t believe this is real life!
