How We Met
Tyler and I have actually known each other since 5th grade. We went to separate elementary schools, but since Buena Vista has only one middle school, we both went to the same one. I remember sitting in Mrs. Patterson’s 5th grade Social Studies class having the biggest crush on Tyler! I guess you could say my infatuation started at a young age. Unluckily for me though, Tyler was not interested; he only had eyes for
the sports he was playing! Throughout middle school and high school, Tyler and I became very good friends.
Since our city is so small, we had the same group of friends, which meant we hung out quite often. We would laugh and joke with each other, but I never saw us as being a couple. I just thought we were really good friends, and nothing more would ever come out of it. Boy, was I wrong!
Spring of sophomore year, Tyler and I started texting and calling each other more often. Our ten minute conversations became hour long conversations. We were attached at the hip in high school and everyone began asking if we were dating. At that point, we weren’t, but I knew we both wanted to be. After one of our baseball/softball games, I received a text from Tyler asking me if I wanted to come over to his house for a movie. I remember it like it was yesterday – the movie was Saw. What a wonderful first movie choice for us! After the movie, Tyler asked me if I would be his girlfriend, and as they say, the rest is history!
how they asked
After eight and a half years of dating, Tyler finally popped the question! Every year, we go on vacation with Tyler’s family to Myrtle Beach. It is a tradition of ours to take family pictures. We get all dressed up and head down to the beach to take our annual pictures, and then normally, we go somewhere nice for dinner afterwards. The last couple of years we have been lucky enough to have a professional photographer in the family (Grant Rettig), so our pictures have been spot on.
After taking some pictures on our condo’s sun deck, we walked down to the beach for more. We took some couples shots like we always do and everything seemed to be going as it normally does. One of our picture traditions is to write “Kerr” in the sand and try our best to stand around it and snap a picture before a wave washes it away. This year, Lisa asked me to write it since I “have teacher handwriting”. I grabbed something to write it with and began. While writing, I hear Tyler say my name.
I turn around and see him on one knee holding the most beautiful ring I have ever seen. I immediately dropped what I was writing with walked closer to Tyler. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it was going to come out of my chest! Tyler then asked those four words I have been waiting to hear for 8 years: “Will you marry me?” Of course I said, “YES!” July 13, 2017 will always be one of the happiest and most memorable days of my life!
