How We Met
Brien and I met while I was at Tyler Junior College (TJC) and Brien was a student at The University of Texas at Austin. I was a member of a band service fraternity called, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Brien was recruited as a member of the TJC competitive indoor drum line. As a member of the service fraternity, I was asked to come along with the drum line to help them load and unload the band busses as well as provide them with anything they needed. While en route to a competition held in Tennessee, we decided to make a pit stop at a gas station. As we were shopping around the percussion director picked up a Ken Barbie and said. “This looks like Brien Bell!!” and I said, “Who is Brien Bell?!” Sure enough, that was the magical moment I met my future husband! While our journey didn’t begin until much later, I will always remember the exact moment I met him. This picture was taken that night in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
how they asked
After my cousin, Sammie moved back to California for graduate school I knew I needed to visit her as soon as I could. Brien was very eager to leave as well, which was a little suspicious, but I didn’t think much of it. He loves my cousin as well so I knew he was eager to see her too. Low and behold, my cousin was in on it the entire time, and I had no idea what was about to go down. I always wanted Brien to give me a “heads up” just because I hate surprises and the feeling of being unprepared for anything. He was quite sneaky. We spent several days enjoying St. Helena, Stockton (where my cousin lives), and the sights and sounds of San Francisco before he popped the question. The morning of the proposal we decided we were going to have brunch and head out to the city. While we were pulled over at a gas station, I went inside to grab a few things to snack on because I was starving. That’s when my cousin and Brien said, “Well, instead of having brunch I think it might be best if we just get into San Francisco.” I reluctantly said, “Ok..” I was starving and was not about to have any of this waiting for lunch business, but sure enough, I did, and I was fine. Sammie and Brien were beginning to get nervous because the traffic was horrible and it took much longer than it should have for us to get there and they knew how “hangry” I was about to become. Once we made it to Sausalito, Sammie and Brien wanted to go up the mountain to get some pictures with us and the city in the background. As we were driving up the mountain, we noticed that there were tons people and no parking spots in sight. I told them that it was ok and we didn’t have to stop because we literally couldn’t find anything. At this point I was becoming frustrated, I was hungry, and they were ignoring me. Sure enough, we found a spot to pull over and take a few pictures. Brien got down on one knee, and we took a few pictures like that and still, I had no idea, Brien will often take pictures like this just because Brien is 6’4 and I am only 5’2. He stood up, grabbed my hands and said, “let’s stay here for a little while.. Bonnie, I can’t think of a more perfect time to do this”, he pulled out the ring and popped the question. I was completely shocked and thrilled. They jokingly asked me if I was still hungry and I said in a shaken voice, “Not anymore, oh my gosh!” We laughed and grabbed lunch at a local restaurant with beautiful ocean views. Needless to say, this surprise was a good one.
