how we met
Ryan and I met back in 2011. We don’t remember the exact moment, but we were both in college as freshmen- Ryan at UC San Diego and I at SDSU. Despite being from different schools, we both were involved with an on-campus ministry called CRU, or as some remember it, Campus Crusade For Christ. It was through a joint-campus event through this club that we would have met. However, we both were in relationships at the time and didn’t think anything of these encounters. Sophomore year arrives and not only are we newly single, but we both accept leadership roles within Cru: Ryan oversees meetings and creative at UC San Diego and I handled socials and group events at State. We no longer were seeing each other just once every 15 weeks or so, but with these quarterly group leadership meetings we were interacting a lot more and taking interest in one another; well at least Ryan was anyhow.
It was at a group broomball night on March 2, 2013 that Ryan first asked for my number. I didn’t think much about it at first, but we started texting more and more and I could tell that he was interested in me. He began going to the same church service time and even organizing group events that were always planned around my schedule. As sweet of a guy as he was, I was still trying to figure out what I wanted in a relationship, so I had to break the news to him that I wasn’t interested in dating anyone at the time. Time went on and we remained friends, seeing each other during our group meetings and even attending a Mumford & Sons concert together that summer. As soon as Junior year arrived though, things began to change, as Ryan decided to become fully involved with the Creative Arts group at our church Flood, rather than serving with Cru. This decision appeared to mark the end of Ryan and I, for we naturally lost touch as we experienced different things in our lives.
Well 2015 came and I began to make some changes in my life by becoming more involved with Flood Church. It was this decision that allowed Ryan and I to cross paths once again and become what we are today. The night was Wednesday, February 11 and we were both at the Flood Offices- Ryan was with his creative arts group and I was with my college group. Normally, Ryan’s group would have ended at 9, but that night he stuck around til 10, the time college group happened to get out. He was just about to lock up and leave when I saw him across the room, so I excitedly called his name and he came walking towards me. I’m not sure what it was, but I was so excited to see him, and I could tell he felt the same about me. We caught up for a bit and then said our goodbyes, but in reality, this goodbye opened the door for another hello.
That following Saturday night, Valentine’s Day in fact, Ryan texts me how great it was to see me the other night and we text all throughout the week. Things seemed different this time around, and I was ready to be with someone as great as he was, so when he asked me that following Sunday if I’d go out to dinner with him, I said yes! It was the perfect night, and from there, well, I guess you can say the rest is history!
how they asked
Kasey and I have talked about getting married for a while now, so I knew that I could really have some fun with how I proposed to her. It happened to be her Birthday the week before, and so I decided to trail off this and package the night as a belated birthday gift. I told her to be ready by 6, but gave no other details other than to dress up nicely and be ready for dinner. When she arrived to my house, I had a gift sitting on the kitchen table and told her to open it. To much confusion, she discovers that it’s a board game, but not just any sort of board game; this game is called Kasey and Ryan’s Grandiego Adventure and I designed it from scratch.
You see, Kasey is a huge fan of games, both card and board games, so I decided to create a custom board game that reflected our relationship and would lead us on an adventure to key date spots throughout San Diego. Soon we were out the door and enjoying dinner at our very first date spot- Underbelly, a ramen shop in North Park area. From there we traveled to downtown San Diego, and then to Balboa Park and Mission Beach. Each of these locations held a significant place in our relationship, and Kasey kept thinking to herself that surely I’d be proposing to her at one of these locations. Well the game went on for almost 4 hours and eventually, after a successful roll of six-three times in a row, I won the game. Real nice, huh?
At this point, Kasey thought the night was over and was stumped as to when I would be proposing to her. Little did she know that back at my house, I had yet another surprise lined up for her; one that she would never forget. We pulled into my driveway and walked through the front door. As soon as we stepped into the kitchen, she noticed all these lights in the backyard, and at this point realized that the night was not over. I grabbed her hand and led her into the backyard- the instrumental version of Little Wonders from Disney’s Meet the Robinsons began to play and the backyard was illuminated with color from overhead cafe lights, candles, and LEDs all throughout the backyard. We came to a corner of the garden and situated upon an easel was another gift, which I prompted Kasey to open.
She tore the paper to reveal a painted picture of she and I depicted as Franny and Lewis Robinson (from our favorite movie Meet the Robinsons), with Lewis down on one knee in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle and cloud puffs forming the words “Will You Marry Me”. At this point, I got down on one knee, spoke some words of endearment and promise, and proposed.
The moment she said yes was the most exciting moment of my life, and I will forever remember how happy she looked and the joy in her eyes. The night could have ended there, but I had one more surprise in store for her! Peeking around the corner of the house, I yelled “Is anyone back there?” and at that moment a swarm of some of Kasey and mine’s closest friends came flooding out. Since 7 PM they had been hanging all the lights in the backyard and hiding out in the garage waiting for the moment to pop out and surround us with their love. It was such a memorable moment and reminded us of how blessed we are to have such an incredible support system!
The rest of the night was filled with smiles, laughs, and celebration as we rung in this new chapter of life with those who love us most! April 22, 2016 became the most exciting day for us both and we cannot wait to begin our life together as a married couple. It’s truly amazing how ones life can change when you find the one you love!
