I lost my dad to stage four kidney cancer on August 27th, 2014. To say I was broken, lost, and devastated, would be an understatement. I grew up a daddy’s girl, and losing him felt like I lost myself. Fast forward a couple years later, and here’s when my story changed.
I had pretty much written off the idea of ever getting married after my dad died since he couldn’t walk me down the isle. The thought of it always hurt too much, but that all changed when Brian came along. I truly believe that God and my dad had been working their magic when they brought him into my life. We’d met not long after my dad passed away, but didn’t officially have our first date until two years to the day of his passing, August 27th, 2016. We visited the cemetery on a very non-traditional first date, and I explained everything about our special bond and got to tell him just how amazing of a father my dad was. I never believed when people said, “When you know, you know”, but after this first date of ours, I knew that this was my future husband.
Fast forward to May 6th, 2017. Brian asked if we could go to the cemetery – something I never say no to. My mom was planning on being there too, but I didn’t think anything of it because she visits my dad daily. We spent some time reminiscing about my dad together, and then so unexpectedly, Brian dropped down on one knee.
He said, “I wanted the two most important people in your life to be a part of this, so I brought you here, where we came on our first date. I knew on that date that you would be my wife, so, Monika, will you marry me?!”
I went into complete shock and after many tears, I said yes!
(This was the moment after he asked that I looked up and thanked God and my dad for bringing this amazing man to me.)
Our proposal story isn’t traditional by any means, but in my eyes, it’s exactly what love is! He knew how important it was for my parents to be involved and he made that happen even if it wasn’t in a traditional way. I can say I’ve never met a person that got engaged in a cemetery!
On June 2nd, 2018, I will marry this amazing man, and I know my dad will be with us every step of the way that day.
