How We Met
Tyler and I were actually introduced about 4 years ago by our sisters who are friends. We went out on a couple of dates, but I had recently just moved to Denver, Colorado, and wasn’t really looking to date long distance. We went our separate ways, dated people in between, and it wasn’t until the winter of 2018 that we reconnected. My version of the story ( he of course tells it different haha), is that he persistently tried to hang out with me and I just wasn’t that into it. I couldn’t really wrap my head around dating someone who lived back in Michigan, even though I was also from there. But what I have learned about Tyler is that he is ridiculously patient. And patiently wait he did. Little by little he worked his way into my life and I eventually opened up to the idea of dating him. For just over a year now we have been dating long distance. Taking as many trips from CO to MI and MI to CO. It’s been a whirlwind of a year and in just a few short days, we will be driving across the country back to our home state so that we can finally be together. (Literally :) )
How They Asked
To understand how our epic story went down, there needs to be a little backstory. When COVID-19 hit, Tyler was able to quarantine in Colorado for about a month, and during that time we discussed our future and how we wanted and needed to be in the same state. My lease was ending in August and after some really great conversations and weighing both options, we decided that it was best for me to move back to Michigan when my lease was up. Tyler planned two trips in a row at the end of August, one for my going away party and one with a one-way ticket so he could drive back to Michigan with me. So needless to say I definitely DID NOT expect what happend next to happen.
I had planned for a girls weekend August 14th-15th because I wanted to have some time with my closest besties prior to having my going away party the following weekend. We got dressed up, went out to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, and finished the night with a slumber party at my friend’s house! When is the last time a group of girls in their 30s had a slumber party?! It was amazing and we had such a great time! That next morning we had planned to do a hike and left around 930am. I, unfortunately, got car sick on the way up to the hike and for the majority of it, I was rather quiet because I had a pounding headache. Little did I know that the girls all knew exactly what was about to go down and somehow got me up there and feeling better without spilling the beans.
As we rounded the final corner and we’re almost at the top, I noticed a wood sign that had my name written on it. I turned to the girls and was like “You guys, my name is on that sign! What is going on?” They all just smiled at me and didn’t say anything and we kept walking. My first thought was that they had planned something sweet for me just with friends.
But when I came upon the next sign that said “Will” on it, I froze. I then realized in my head that Tyler was there, somewhere on the mountain. I scanned for him for a minute and just as I got up to the sign with “You” written on it, he stepped out from behind a tree and I dropped to my knees. I couldn’t really comprehend all that was going on but also knew exactly what was going on all at the same time.
When I got to him we hugged, and I was crying, and he told me that he wanted to make me happy for the rest of his life and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I obviously said yes and we were cheered on by strangers who sat on the rocks overlooking us and had waited for my arrival to watch the proposal.
Now one would think that this huge surprise would have been enough. I didn’t even know he was in town (I found out later that he actually had flown in THAT morning! Ahh!), let alone that he would be waiting on top of a mountain for me. But no, he had much bigger things up his sleeve. After my girlfriends came down and celebrated with us, I noticed that people were taking pictures of us and realized he had asked friends of ours to document the entire thing.
And as I was hugging and crying with them, out from around the corner my SISTERS came into view, and I of course lost it again. My sisters and their husbands, and his brother and sister-in-law all made the trek from Michigan to be a part of this amazing day. I couldn’t believe it. I still can’t believe it. More friends kept showing up and I couldn’t stop crying. We popped some champagne, took a lot of pics, starred at my ring (which I am OBSESSED with haha), and then made our way back down the mountain where I was told we would be having a little engagement party at my friend’s house.
Wow. What a day. What a proposal. What a guy I have. He knows and loves me so well and put so much thought and planning into making this day exactly something that he and I both hoped and dreamed it would be. Thank you, Tyler Evan, I love you.
