How We Met
Dillan and I (Bethany) met via social media back in April of 2015. We started messaging and eventually exchanged numbers and Snapchat usernames. After a few weeks of texting and snapchatting back and forth, I hit a rough patch in the semester and it seemed like nothing was going right between finals, friends and everything in between. One night, I was telling Dillan all about my struggles and he took the opportunity to ask me on a date to take my mind off of things. I went to a college that was about an hour and 20 minutes away from his and we decided that it would be best to meet up at his college and go to a nearby town for a nice dinner and go and see a movie (one of my favorites, the latest Fast and Furious) so on April 23rd, we had our first date. We met at the only place I knew how to get to on campus and I parked my car and got out to get in to his truck.
I’m pretty sure the look I gave him when he got out of the truck made him nervous (mainly because I had no idea why he would be getting out of the truck) so he said the first thing that came to mind and that was “Wow, you are short.” He then walked around to my side of his truck and opened the door for me, which I was totally not expecting. It was in that moment that I knew he was different from other guys I had met. The rest of the night was perfect and the next morning, I went to breakfast with one of my best guy friends and could not stop talking about how perfect the date the night before was. I remember saying, “I don’t know what it is, but there’s something so different about him.” The next week we met up again and had our second date and it was that night that he asked me officially to be his girlfriend. We have had our share of trials, from going through long distance, not just once but twice, and everything else you can imagine but we have taken every challenge head on and always come out on top. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
how they asked
In May of 2016, Dillan asked my dad for permission to marry me and he said yes but gave him one stipulation – that he had to graduate college first. I knew that he wouldn’t graduate with his engineering degree until May 2018, so I wasn’t expecting anything before then. I knew that we would get married so I wasn’t that worried about the logistics of it all. In June of 2017, Dillan told me that I should be expecting a ring before the end of summer. I initially brushed it off because of what my dad had told us but I also kept it in the back of my mind. The week of the proposal came and I had made plans for us to retake some photos that we had taken when we first started dating while his family would be camping at the same lake we had taken the first photos at.
Dillan convinced me to move those plans from Saturday to Sunday and to go to Hot Springs on a double date with friends on Saturday. Anyone who knows me knows that Hot Springs, Arkansas, is my favorite place, so of course I said yes. The plan was for me to stay the night with my friend Margaret and that my sister, Katherine, would meet us and we would all come down to Hot Springs and meet up with Dillan and some friends he was bringing. This struck me as a little odd at first because Dillan is a huge outdoors-man and he was giving up fishing to go on a date with me but I shrugged it off, bought myself a new dress and prepared for the weekend.
Friday came and I stayed the night with Margaret and on Saturday, we went to get our nails done (because Dillan had planted the idea in my head the week before and made me think it was my idea to get my nails done). Katherine met us and we all drove to Hot Springs. For those who don’t know, Hot Springs, was built on top of several natural hot springs and back in the early 1900’s, it was very popular to visit the bathhouses that were built along the main road in town and as a self proclaimed HGTV/history buff, it is the most gorgeous place I can think of.
We met Dillan at the fountain at the beginning of “Bathhouse Row” and started walking towards the end of the row because Dillan said we were going to actually go in to one of the working bathhouses because I had never been inside one of them before. As we were walking, he started to veer me up this ramp that was in between two of the bathhouses and away from the street. I kept asking him where we were going and he just kept saying we’re just going right up here. I looked up and there were rose petals scattered all over the ground in front of us and my initial thought was, “Someone must have gotten engaged here earlier.” He then leaned over towards me and said “You know I love you right?” and I knew right then what was happening.
We walked up to the steps of the Grand Promenade where the rose petals were and the entire way I was crying my eyes out because I couldn’t believe it was actually happening. Then the man of my dreams got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him and of course I said yes!
The biggest surprise came later when we went back to the lake and I found my entire family along with several of our friends waiting for us with food and cake to celebrate.
It was the most perfect day and I couldn’t not be more excited to spend the rest of my life with this amazing man!
