Monica and Benjamin
How We Met
Benjamin and I have know each other since we were 13. We met through one of my best friends, Ali and would spend time together from time to time. We lived in the same town, but attended two different high schools. I always had a boyfriend, but Benjamin and I always were close friends. It was not until high school that we were at our summer church camp at Harvey Cedars, New Jersey when Benj walked me out to the dock to tell me he felt more for me than just a friend. Being a giddy 15 year old, I brushed it off and told him I did not feel the same way. Over the next couple of years we would spend time together with our mutual friends and even meet for dinner from time to time, but I always just saw him as a good friend. There were two short periods of time that Benj and I tried to take the leap from friends to significant others but both times it did not work. Benj is a country music artist and moved to Nashville, TN in 2011 to pursue his dreams where he attended Belmont University. I took a different route and attended Penn State University to get my degree in public relations. The summer before my senior year of college I heard that Benj was going to be back in our hometown doing a show and I asked my roommate if she wanted to go. She had never met him and I told her a brief story of our history and said get dressed we are going to a country concert! We show up to a hole in the wall venue and could barely see the stage because of the smoke in the air, but when I look back on it it was one of the best nights of my life because little did I know it would be the start of me and Benjamin’s forever. Since that show we have been inseparable. My roommate and I would travel all over the east coast to see him and his band play and as the summer came to an end, Benjamin and I had to make a decision that we both knew had only one answer. We were going to do long distance and no matter what we were going to make it work. I headed back to State College, PA for my final year of college and he went back to Nashville to continue his journey. For an entire school year we traveled 14 hours to see each other. A lot of the time we would meet in a location where he had a gig and just see each other for a total of 10 hours, but it didn’t matter to us because something was better than not having each other. Once the school year started to come to an end I knew i had to start making my future plans. I began applying to jobs in my hometown and in Nashville. Two months after I graduated I made the 12 hour move from everything I knew to start my job and my new life with Benjamin in Music City. It was the best decision I ever mad and the 15-year-old boy that confessed his love to me on the dock 8 years ago is now the center of my life! Benjamin just signed a record deal with Sony Music Nashville and I work full-time for a marketing and PR firm. On the weekends we travel all over the east coast and mid-west for his shows and during the week we live a simple southern life with our close friends in Nashville- we couldn’t imagine it any other way.
how they asked
Benjamin and I had always discussed how one day we were going to pack a bag, drive to the airport, and just pick a flight to get on. One day I was at work and Benjamin called to say his car had died and he needed a ride to the bank. I picked him up and when I was about to drop him back off at his house he suggested I come in for a minute. Not thinking anything of it I headed up to his apartment before I headed to a work event. Benjamin started suggesting I not go to the event. The only thing that came to mind was that he was hungry and wanted me to cancel my plans so we could eat earlier. Telling him I HAD to go to this event he said he was sorry, but I was not going to be able to go. He walked over to me holding two pieces of paper and said …because you are going to Florida! It took about 5 minutes of convincing, but after he convinced me that he wasn’t messing with me I rushed to my house to pack my bags because our flight for Clearwater Beach, Florida was taking off in 2 hours! I was a giddy school girl and could not believe he planned a romantic weekend getaway for the two of us in the middle of winter.
I am a huge fan of the beach. Benjamin and I always talk about the fact if he wasn’t pursing his dreams of becoming a country music star I would force him to live in a shack on the beach somewhere with me instead of the great city of Nashville!
After a short plane ride, we landed in Tampa, Florida and took a short ride to our hotel. By this time it was at least midnight and I was ready to do anything but go to sleep. I suggested we unpack our bags and go explore the resort a little. We freshened up and off we went to the hotel tiki bar. The bar was set up right along a private beach so when the bartender told me they were closing down for the night Benjamin suggested we could check out the private beaches. I agreed and down we went to the gorgeous jetties and white sand beach. We were standing there checking out the view when I noticed that Benjamin was shivering. I asked him what was wrong and said it was not that cold! Later on we were talking and I found out that he was not shivering, but that his heart was pounding so fast and his nerves were getting worked up for what he was about to do. I suggested we continue on our “tour” and keep moving. Benjamin pulled me back and started talking. At this point in the night I completely blacked out and do not remember a word he was saying because a few seconds later he was down on one knee asking me to spend the rest of forever with him! I screamed and I cried and I did everything a girl would do when the love of her life proposes to her. I spent the rest of the night in awe and slept about 1 hour. I called every family member and all of my friends to tell them the unbelievable news! It was the most perfect proposal any girl could have ever imagined and it was exactly tailored to me and what Benjamin knew I loved. We spent the next 3 days in the cutest beach down of Clearwater Beach, Florida – it was perfect.
