Becca and Ryan
How We Met
Ryan and I met in 8th grade. We became friends then but didn’t have many classes together again until our junior year of high school. Around Christmas time that year, we were at a friend’s house, having a particularly intense nerf gun war, when I couldn’t find my phone. The guys had taken it and added Ryan’s number. A few days later, on Christmas Eve, I received a text from him. We chatted a little about our Christmas Eve traditions and finally got around to admitting that we liked each other. After Christmas, we went out to eat then to a friend’s house to hang out and watch District 9. When the movie ended, Ryan walked me to my car, and we had our first kiss.
We officially started dating on New Year’s Eve 2010 and have been together ever since. We managed a four-year, long-distance relationship while in college. He went to the University of Colorado, and I went to the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating, I moved to Colorado because we were both sick of being apart! We’ve lived in Colorado for the past three years and have been having a blast moving in together and figuring out our future.
how they asked
After eight years together and a lot of discussions about marriage, I knew that the proposal was coming. Two things were important to us when getting engaged. First, we wanted the moment itself to be between the two of us. Second, we wanted to celebrate with family and friends after. As we live in Colorado and most of our family and friends live in Pennsylvania, I was anticipating the proposal to happen during our trip home for Christmas. The day before Christmas Eve, however, I got really sick with the stomach bug and was very upset thinking that this was our chance to be home with everyone to celebrate. Ryan even joked with my family that I was ruining Christmas.
Luckily, I felt much better the next day, Christmas Eve, and Ryan asked me to go for a walk with him. Hiking is one of our favorite things to do together. We walked around a nearby park, and I kept thinking he was going to get down on one knee. However, we left the park without it happening. On the drive back, Ryan took a detour through our high school. We got out to look at a tiny house that the students were building, and on the way back to the car, he pulled me over to a grassy area in front of the school. I started bawling, knowing for sure that this was it. He said some very sweet words, got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of our lives together. After, we went back to my parent’s house and celebrated with family and friends.
Getting engaged on Christmas Eve at our high school was especially meaningful. We are high school sweethearts and first told each other about our mutual crush on Christmas Eve 2009. It is also special because my parents were engaged at their high school and his parents were engaged on Christmas Eve too!
