How We Met
Dustin and I met in college in Atlanta, GA back in 2009. We were both athletes, he was a swimmer and I played basketball so we crossed paths at the athletic center and around campus often. I had friends who were swimmers and they brought me to some of the infamous swimmer parties where we eventually met. One Saturday night, I got Dustin’s phone number from a friend so we could get to know each other a little better. My friend ended up taking my phone and inviting Dustin over to hang out. Not sure if he’d show up, we headed back to my apartment…and he was there! After a fun evening together, he said he would call me, but I didn’t think he actually would because, come on, this was college. The very next afternoon, Dustin called and asked me out to dinner. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Dustin and I were a grade apart in college, and when Dustin graduated in 2011 he moved to LA to pursue a career in the entertainment industry while I was still in school. Not really sure what would happen between us, we decided to start the long distance game. Little did we know, we were about to embark on a 5 year long distance relationship! Dustin was in LA for 3 years while I finished college in Georgia and began graduate school back in Maryland where I’m from. Long distance relationships are hard, but long distance relationships across the country are something to be said about. Nonetheless, we made it work because we knew our relationship was something worth fighting for. While I was still in grad school in Maryland, Dustin moved back to Atlanta, GA where we remained in a long distance relationship for two more years while I finished my degree (it seemed a little easier now that he was in the eastern timezone). I graduated from grad school in May 2016, and we knew it was only a matter of time before we could finally be together. Fast forward to August 2016 when I moved to Atlanta and we started our new journey: living together in the same city and seeing each other everyday. We had been dating 7.5 years before he finally popped the question.
how they asked
We planned a trip together to Denver, CO over a long Fourth of July weekend in 2017. We knew we wanted to do some hiking, go to some breweries, and travel to different parts of Colorado. Before the trip, Dustin bought some new camera equipment (including a tripod), nothing out of the ordinary for him and definitely didn’t cause suspicion. We got a recommendation from a friend to hike along the Mitchell Lake Trailhead up to Blue Lake which is in the Rocky’s outside of Boulder, CO. The trail was supposed to be 5 miles roundtrip and ended up being more like 8.5 miles and through lots of snow! Along the hike, Dustin kept stopping to set up his tripod and take videos of the scenery. The views were spectacular!
Finally, after a steep incline, snow, rocks, several falls on my part, and pure exhaustion we made it to Blue Lake. Dustin set up the tripod and camera again to get a shot of the breathtaking mountains and lake. He asked me to get in the frame and pose with him. Then he turned to me and said, “I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” I looked at him and thought he was joking at first. Then he got down on one knee and asked “Will you marry me?” I was totally surprised!! I said “Oh My God!” and then “Yes!” We still had to hike back down the mountain, and both of us were itching to call our families and tell them the good news. Too bad we were out of cell service for about 5 hours before we were able to tell anyone! My family means the world to me, and I was nervous that they had no idea he was planning this. Turns out, my entire family knew it was coming, my parents and my two sisters, and they all kept it a secret for months! Dustin and my family know how much I love surprises, and this was by far my favorite and most magical one yet.
