How We Met
Doug & I went to kindergarten and high school together – we knew of each other but didn’t actually know each other. In 2011, I was living in Maine & came home to California for Spring Break. I ran into Doug at a party and we started talking. I moved back to California that fall & we began to hang out together. On Thursdays we would have “Jersey Shore nights,” which were always an awesome excuse to hang out.
People started to ask if we were dating and we would always say “no, we’re just friends.” Fast forward a few months later to my best friend telling me, “he’s perfect for you, I don’t know how you can’t see that.” The day I woke up and realized I had feelings for him was the day it was over. We started dating on Friday the 13th, a day that has always brought me good luck. Since we started dating, we’ve gone on so many adventures, family outings, and celebrated tons of holidays together. We’ve talked about getting married and I knew it would happen, but I just didn’t know when.
how they asked
I told him I wanted two things when we got engaged: my nails had to be done, and I wanted photos documenting the moment! My sister is a wedding photographer in New Hampshire and came to visit for the week of Thanksgiving. She asked me a few weeks before if I would go to a photo session with her on the beach (something I’ve done before!) and she told Doug that she’d buy him a drink downtown after if he wanted to go to! I thought, “wow…Doug must really want a margarita too.” My sister knows how much I love pictures and she told me she needed to check the light before her clients arrived, and then she grabbed a few “test shots.” Doug and I started posing for pictures and when I turned around he was on one knee asking me to marry him.
I immediately started crying (I didn’t even remember saying yes!) and couldn’t stop hugging him or staring at my gorgeous ring. He told me to look up on the pier, where I saw his mom and sister waving at us! I couldn’t believe that it had actually happened & not only did his family get to witness it, but it was documented forever. We are so excited & I love looking through the photos that my sister took!
