Brittany and Jamie's Beautiful Proposal in Boston

Beautiful Proposal in Bostonwidth=How we met: Jamie and I met on January 19th, 2014 at my church in Boston, MA. As fate would have it, his former youth pastors planted a new church in Back Bay, and I started attending in August of 2014. Jamie and some of his friends were flown up to be the musicians at a special weekend event, and I showed up per usual to play violin on that cold, snowy night.

Jamie likes to say I stopped him in his tracks. He walked into the small office space where we were rehearsing the music for the service and saw me tuning my violin. I looked up an noticed him right away too. Neither of us can pin point it, but we’ll both tell you that there was something about the other person that just intrigued us. I remember how kind and personable Jamie was, and I thought to myself that southern boys were so polite!

He asked if he could sit next to me during the service, and we got to talk for just a few minutes here and there. After the service ended, Jamie asked me for my number so he could “check in on the band and see how we were doing.” I thought he was genuine, so without hesitation I told him.

Our paths crossed again later that night when my girlfriend and I bumped into them at a local restaurant in Copley Square. It was brief, but I remember wanting to see him just for a few more minutes. Then we said goodbye once more, and Jamie returned back to Baton Rouge the next morning.

Three days later Jamie sent me a message, and slowly but surely he became my favorite person to talk to. We would spend hours texting back and forth about everything from our favorite music to what our childhoods were like. We quickly found out that coincidentally, we both had recently started reading the same book by C.S. Lewis. Every week we would send each other our notes. We looked for every excuse to stay in contact. By February I knew that I was falling in love with him, and in May he finally came to visit me again in Boston.

Jamie spent 4 days with me in Boston, but I knew from the moment I picked him up at the airport that I never wanted to be without him. That weekend Jamie I got to take Jamie to all of my favorite places in Boston, and then I took him to Plymouth, MA to meet my family. Life seemed is if it had just begun. Jamie was the most remarkable man I had ever met.

The day before he returned home we had a serious discussion about our relationship. Were we really going to start dating even though we lived 1500 miles away from each other? Later that night Jamie walked me home and we shared our first kiss on the steps of Newbury Street surrounded by snow flakes and christmas lights.

how they asked: Our proposal story began long before the rainy November morning when Jamie got down on one knee and asked me to be his bride. Jamie had been planning with my two older sisters about all the details of the day for months, but knew that he couldn’t do much before speaking to my parents. On October 9th Jamie flew out to Boston and took my parents for lunch. That day he received my parents blessing, shopped for the outfit he would give me the morning of the proposal, and then flew back to Baton Rouge where I thought he was home sick from work all day.

Fast forward to the evening of October 30th. I was at work, dressed as mini mouse, conducting my middle school orchestra students in their fall concert. We took the stage, performed our pieces, and then I walked off the stage to find Jamie standing there with a dozen red roses. I had never been so surprised or so happy in my entire life. Little did I know that this was jus the beginning of the most romantic weekend of my life.

The next day Jamie had to come to work with me. As I taught 3rd graders songs about pumpkins and danced to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, Jamie sat in my office and tried to compose himself for what he was about to do the next day.

On November 1st, 2014, Jamie woke me up with three boxes of presents. The first was a lovely, white, lace dress. The second was a beautiful sweater to wear over the dress, and the last were boots and stockings that I would also wear that day. Jamie told me to go get dressed and he was going to take me into Boston so we could re-live our very first date that had taken place exactly 6 months beforehand.

It was cold, rainy, and grey in the city, but Jamie and I seemed to be in our own little bubble all morning. We went to Pavement on Newbury street for bagels and lattes and reminisced about our first interactions. Jamie pulled out a tiny box and a card for me to read. His words were so genuine and loving, and I couldn’t help but cry while I read his card. I then opened the tiny box to find a beautiful gold necklace with tiny speckled diamonds. I was at a loss for words. This was the nicest gift anyone had ever given me.

After we left the coffee house Jamie anxiously lead me down Newbury street to where we shared our first kiss, and then he lead me to Copley Square. I remember that as we were stopped at a cross walk I rested my head against his chest and could hear how fast his heart was pounding. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but I knew that something amazing was happening.

We walked down Clarendon Street, and walked up the stairs to Trinity Church where Jamie had previously set up a beautiful blanked with flowers, chocolates, presents, champagne and personalized champagne glasses. We knelt down on the blanket and Jamie had me open up my first present.

It was a photo book that he had put together, documenting everything we had been through thus far: our first texts that we had sent back and forth, silly selflies that we sent to each other, screen shots of FaceTime dates from thousands of miles apart, and pictures from our summer of love. Jamie ended the book by writing, “And they lived happily ever after.” I was smiling from ear to ear at this point. Then, Jamie told me to look at my watch. It was a gift that he had given me a few months beforehand, and it was special because we text each other every day at 11:11 to make a wish. I looked down at my watch and realized that it was exactly 11:11 a.m. Jamie said to me, “Stand up, close your eyes, and make a wish. And don’t open them until I tell you to, okay?” I listened to his instructions and excitedly stood up. I felt him grab my hands and tell me to open my eyes. He was down on one knee and was holding the most beautiful diamond ring I had ever seen. He explained to me that this ring was a symbol of how he would provide for me physically, mentally, spiritually, and financially for the rest of our lives, and then he asked me if I would marry him. I jumped up and down, shrieked with joy, and hugged and kissed him so tightly before remembering to say yes!

We laughed, cried, hugged, and basked in the moment before my sisters, my mom, and two of our closest friends came out from hiding and greeted us. Our two friends were photographers that Jamie and my mother had flown up to capture this wonderful day. We love our pictures from Abby Tohline, and are so thrilled to have these memories for the rest of our lives.
