I met Anslee when she was in high school, I was still in the U.S. AirForce stationed in Oklahoma City. My roommate, Manuel, from the military is married to Anslee’s oldest sister. He asked me to share the drive down to southeast Texas right after shift one day so he could make it to Anslee’s high school graduation. That is the first time I met Anslee and her entire family.
Manny and I got out of the military a few months after the graduation trip. I continued to visit Texas every year in the fall to catch up with my old friend and his family. Manny and his wife had a baby girl and I went to visit in October 2010. They were very busy with the new baby which left Anslee and I lots of time to hang out and talk.
After all those years we started dating in November of 2010. For the last three years we have been long distance. We are able to visit each month taking turns traveling.
The proposal was three years of me brainstorming with less than two weeks of real planning and preparation. My mother and sister were going to be in Florida visiting my grandmother. I told Anslee that we should sneak to Florida and surprise my grandma. I also told her that Grandma, my mom and sister had plans for the weekend so we could do something fun on our own… like hang out in Clearwater at the beach. Being at the beach and watching sunsets are probably her two favorite things. I also had read in a travel magazine that Clearwater was voted #1 sunset in the U.S. After looking at pictures of pier 60 and the sunset I knew it would be perfect. I just mentioned a trip to the beach and to surprise Grandma and Anslee was on board.
I definitely wanted this event to be photographed. It would be too cool not too. After I found Andi Diamond Photography I knew all of my planning and preparation would pay off in those images. Anslee was under the impression that we needed to be somewhat dressed up to go out for dinner reservations, but first we would watch the sunset over the water then head to dinner.
Andi came up with a plan to make this go smoothly- she was already set up on the beach and we went to sit nearby. She approached us and asked us to stand in for some pictures because she is testing out some new camera equipment and her assistant didn’t show up. Andi took some pictures of us and finally gave me a nod that it was the perfect time.
I asked Anslee if she could stand up and hold my hands so I could say a prayer with her before the sun set. About halfway through I think she figured out what was happening. Andi threw me my camera case (I had given it to her earlier so she could take some pictures on my camera) which contained the ring. I got down onto one knee and asked Anslee Denise Teal to marry me. SHE SAID YES!!!!
