How We Met
Auburn University is a school rooted deeply in tradition. As the Auburn family, we believe that our past and our heritage made us who we are. One of Auburn’s beloved rituals is Camp War Eagle. CWE acts as a two-day orientation process for incoming freshman to learn all about the university that they will someday call their home. Evan and I met our sophomore year of college during training as CWE counselors. We both have a passion for our sweet Auburn, and couldn’t wait to teach our freshman about all of the wonderful things that make our home special.
Surprisingly, we didn’t spend much time together until six months after we met! Evan asked all 36 counselors if anyone wanted to play kickball on a sunny day in April of 2016, and I happily obliged. We ended up being the only two in the park, so Evan taught me to throw a frisbee as we talked and talked for what seemed like hours. After that day, we spent the entire summer becoming the best of friends! 10 movie nights, a trip down the Carolina/Georgia coast and an entire summer later, I knew that Evan was the man of my dreams.
how they asked
Fast forward to our last semester of undergrad at Auburn. Evan had planned an extravagant dinner date for the two of us, his sweet sister McKenzie, and her boyfriend Carter. I had been looking forward to it all week but remained suspicious since we had talked about engagement so often the previous few months. I’m sure I asked him at least 50 times if Saturday was going to be the day he asked me to marry him, and each time he assured me that it was not. By the time Saturday rolled around, I was sure that it would be a normal date just like Evan had told me. We showed up at our favorite place, Town Creek Park, to meet McKenzie and Carter before dinner. As we walked along the path hand-in-hand, Evan leaned to me and asked, “Isn’t that Nathaly over there?” Nathaly is a new friend that is absolutely the most talented photographer in the world. I replied enthusiastically that it was Nathaly, and we went over to talk. I didn’t want to interrupt her session with the adorable couple she was photographing, so we just spoke for a minute and kept walking. This should have been a dead giveaway for me, but I was oblivious!
We walked a bit further when Evan stopped suddenly. I asked him why he stopped walking, but when he looked into my eyes I knew. I could feel my whole body start to shake as he told me how much he loved me, that my parents were thrilled at our match, and most importantly, that he wanted me to be his wife. Evan got down on his knee and opened up a box to reveal the most beautiful and extraordinary ring I had ever seen in my life. I felt so happy that I could barely breathe when Evan exclaimed, “Baylee Montana Wynn, will you marry me?” As my heart overflowed with joy, I yelled out “YES, YES, OF COURSE!”
After all of this excitement, we hopped back into the car to head to dinner at my favorite restaurant in Auburn, Amsterdam Cafe. I kept mentioning to him that we needed to call our parents, but Evan asked if we could wait and enjoy this moment just the two of us. As we pulled up to the restaurant, I noticed my parents car parked outside. Evan had managed to gather both of our families to celebrate with us. I couldn’t imagine a more wonderful day or a more wonderful man to spend the rest of my life with. Evan Montgomery Kinchler, I cannot wait to be your wife!
