How We Met
Nick and I went to high school together. We didn’t get along the first few years and kept a strong distance from each other. The junior year rolled around and we were at a school event when a mutual friend randomly said to us, “you two would make a cute couple, you should date.” Before that moment we never even thought about each other as friends, let alone as a couple. But something in that moment kind of clicked and things changed. We began to talk more and more and a few months later we started officially dating. We’ve been high school sweethearts ever since.
how they asked
I am a college student and Nick lives and works 6 hours away in central California. We thought it would be fun to plan a getaway over my spring break and booked a trip to Amsterdam. One morning on our trip, Nick had said he wanted to see some botanical gardens. So we got dressed and headed out for the day on our moped scooter we had rented. Once on the road, he made a wrong turn which led to another wrong turn and eventually we were completely off course, or so I thought. We decided to park and walk the rest of the way. But with it being -10 degrees Celsius with the wind chill, it made wandering the streets a bit more difficult. We couldn’t find the gardens anywhere and I was just looking for a place to go inside to get warm.
Suddenly we found ourselves on the path of the seven bridges, an iconic spot in Amsterdam. Nick asked me to stop and take a picture of the bridges and since I was so cold I didn’t want to take my gloves off to take a picture. He asked me again to take the picture and so I did, a bit grudgingly. After the picture, I turned around to find him down on his knee and asking me to marry him.
I was in shock and thoroughly frozen from the cold but said yes automatically. He hugged me and we laughed together and he turned me around to see the professional photographer he has hired to capture the whole moment. We then had a 2-hour photoshoot throughout the streets of Amsterdam. The whole day was purely magical.
