How We Met
Ben and I met in a hotel lobby in August of 2009 after attending the same banquet. Because it is an annual banquet, we ran into each other again in 2011 and 2012. But in 2012, Ben asked me to be his date to the banquet. I said “yes” and we had a wonderful dinner, talking and laughing together. We discovered we had a lot in common. At the end of the night, Ben asked me to leave the hotel and get dessert with him. I had an early flight the next morning so I politely declined. But Ben knew we had something special and didn’t want that to be the last time we saw each other. So, he persuaded the lady at the front desk to tell him what room I was staying in. He wrote me a handwritten letter telling me how he felt about me and slipped it under my hotel room door. When I woke up the next morning and found the letter, I knew it was the start of “us.”
how they asked
Ben is a law clerk for the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in Houston and asked me to be his +1 to a work dinner. He told me it was going to be a black tie affair and the dinner would be at a restaurant with a great view of downtown. A few hours before the dinner, he told me there was an emergency brief he needed to file at the court, so I would just have to meet him there. When I arrived, I saw that it was not a work dinner after all.
Instead, I saw lit candles surrounding a heart of roses, a cellist and violinist who began to play “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” softly in the background, and the love of my life standing in the heart waiting for me so he could ask me the most important question of both of our lives.
